Old Mrs. Sloan was right. For a family like the Sloans, getting your hands on shares in the Sloan Group wasn’t so easy.
If you gave them to an ordinary person who knew nothing, no matter how many shares they had, they would be carved up and left with nothing. In a worst-case scenario, their life might even be in danger—it’s like a child carrying a priceless treasure. Who wouldn’t be green with envy?
Miranda Lancaster had been very thoughtful. She gave them to that friend of hers.
According to her, that friend was exceptionally talented and brilliant, also from a prominent family. He was resourceful, knowledgeable, and even skilled in medicine. Ethan Sloan was nothing compared to him. Moreover, the man was more than twenty years older than Ethan. Miranda felt at ease leaving the shares to someone so shrewd and capable.
But no one could have imagined that those shares would ultimately end up with Estelle Lockwood.
Had Miranda Lancaster even heard of Estelle Lockwood back then?
Estelle Lockwood, however, pondered for a moment before saying, "The friend you mentioned... that might have been my grandfather."
"That old coot from the Lockwood family?" Old Mrs. Sloan’s brow furrowed sharply.
Estelle choked for a second. Old Mrs. Sloan really was a character. She shook her head. "Not the one from the Lockwood family. The grandfather who adopted me. After I was abandoned by Rose Lowell, my grandfather found me, raised me, and even gave me my name."
’But Grandfather came from a prominent family?’ Estelle instantly thought of the Lockwood family.
It seemed her grandfather really was connected to the Lockwood family. At the very least, Miranda Lancaster had known it back then.
Only then did Old Mrs. Sloan nod. "So that’s how it is. That makes perfect sense. Miranda always had a mind of her own."
Old Mrs. Sloan had the two of them stay for a meal. As they were leaving, she said slowly,
"Nathaniel, when you have time, bring Christian and the others over for me to see. Oh, and also, throw a party for me."
Nathaniel Sloan wasn’t surprised by the first request. He had a feeling his grandmother had changed a lot, as if she’d come to terms with certain things.
As for the second request, he was momentarily confused, but he quickly understood.
Old Mrs. Sloan sighed. ’Whatever I say, Nathaniel understands. My son, on the other hand... Ugh, how did I end up with a son like Ethan Sloan?!’
...
Old Mrs. Sloan had been publicly declared to be in a coma and recuperating. But the moment she reappeared at the Sloan Group, she verbally eviscerated the board, giving both Ethan Sloan and Old Mr. Lancaster a vicious tongue-lashing.
And so, every prominent family in Crestfall’s high society learned one thing: Old Mrs. Sloan was awake.
The old matriarch sent out a flood of invitations, asking everyone to be guests at her manor. The reason given was that since she had just awoken, she wanted to gather people at the estate to liven it up and drive away the lingering air of sickness.
In her youth, this Old Mrs. Sloan had been a powerhouse in her own right. Many families knew she wasn’t someone to be trifled with. On top of that, the invitations were sent in Nathaniel Sloan’s name, so everyone would certainly pay him the respect of attending.
Two days later, the once-quiet manor was bustling with activity.
Estelle Lockwood entered through the main gate with her three little cubs and saw quite a few familiar faces from a distance.
Besides Thea York, she was surprised to see Laura Jennings there as well.
Nathaniel Sloan frowned. "I didn’t invite the York family." ’Let alone Laura Jennings.’
A knowing look flickered in Estelle Lockwood’s eyes. Old Mrs. Sloan’s return was a major event. It was only normal that some people couldn’t sit still and would find a way to sneak in.
’But Laura Jennings... The Sloan Group is in such chaos, and she’s still in the mood to attend a party?’
The manor was so vast that even the guests, who were all from prominent families, couldn’t help but be amazed.
