Princess Avery said appreciatively, "You may be the fake heiress, but you’re certainly ruthless."
She knew her son had driven countless women to their deaths, and Noelle Lockwood certainly knew it too. For Noelle to still want her son to marry Estelle in that situation was truly ruthless.
Noelle Lockwood’s face went pale, and she swayed on her feet. "Princess... I never meant to harm my sister..."
Princess Avery sneered. "It’s a real shame a person like you can’t be my daughter-in-law."
Noelle Lockwood was sick of hearing the words "daughter-in-law." ’Who wants to be her daughter-in-law!’ she thought. Knowing she couldn’t hide the truth any longer, she said:
"Princess, it’s true that I was the one who gave my sister’s photo to Mr. Reno, but I only did it for her own good... You might not know this, but my sister’s current husband, Mr. Nathaniel Sloan, has always been in love with me... She’s not the least bit happy in her marriage to him."
"My sister has never had anyone who truly understands her, so I thought I’d introduce her to Mr. Reno. I’m sure Mr. Reno will make Estelle happy."
Princess Avery appreciated clever people like this who didn’t spell things out. Perfect.
Noelle Lockwood said in an envious tone, "I’m sure my sister will be overjoyed to marry Mr. Reno. She’ll be the happiest woman in the world!"
Estelle Lockwood had just walked through the door when she heard Noelle Lockwood’s remark.
The eyes of the nearby reporters glinted, and they recorded everything.
...
There weren’t many guests at the manor today, but everyone who needed to be there had arrived.
Estelle Lockwood scanned the crowd, very satisfied.
’Yes, all the Lockwood relatives, Noelle Lockwood’s whole clan of aunts and distant cousins, all gathered in one place. Perfect.’
Estelle’s plan for the day wasn’t just to defeat them, but to crush their spirits—she was going to expose Noelle Lockwood’s true status in public. Of course, Austin Lockwood could refuse to acknowledge it.
’But... with so many Lockwood relatives present, surely some of them knew the truth, right?’
"Miss... Estelle."
Suddenly, a low, husky male voice sounded beside her.
Nathaniel Sloan was in disguise, wearing a bodyguard’s uniform. His broad shoulders and long legs drew quite a few looks as he stood to the side.
He lowered his voice, the sound sending a pleasant tingle through Estelle’s ear. "Everything’s been arranged. Go have your fun."
Estelle Lockwood raised an eyebrow. "Those are your words."
"Yes. My words."
"Estelle."
Just then, Austin Lockwood came out of the house. He was about to smile when he saw Estelle, but the sight of the two "bodyguards" beside her made his expression instantly harden. "Who are they?" he demanded.
"Bodyguards," Estelle said nonchalantly.
"Nonsense!" Austin Lockwood snapped, afraid Estelle had discovered something. "Why would you bring bodyguards to your own home? How absurd! Anyone who didn’t know better would think the Lockwood family mistreats you!"
Estelle Lockwood didn’t back down an inch. She shrugged. "Chairman Lockwood, I came back to the Lockwood family when I was eighteen. This banquet to welcome me is years late. It’s only natural for me to suspect you have ulterior motives. Bringing a couple of bodyguards seems perfectly reasonable, don’t you think?"
Austin Lockwood’s expression stiffened.
Estelle tilted her head. "Besides, isn’t everyone at the banquet today ’family’? Even if I brought bodyguards, no outsiders would know, so no one could accuse you of ’mistreating me.’ Unless..."
Estelle paused, her tone laced with meaning. "Unless Chairman Lockwood is planning to do something that can’t see the light of day, and that’s why you don’t want me to have bodyguards?"
The Bodyguard Sloan chimed in at the perfect moment. "Miss Estelle, if it isn’t safe, perhaps we should leave first."
At his words, Estelle started to walk away.
"Estelle!" Austin Lockwood said, panicking. He forced a false smile. "It’s fine, bring the bodyguards if you must. It’s my fault for being too harsh in the past, which has made you so wary. It’s all my fault. Come on, please, come inside."
