The room was plunged into a dead silence.
Nathaniel Sloan’s lips curved into a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. No one dared to say a word.
...What was there to say?!
After half a minute, Zachery’s eyes darted around, and he suddenly coughed. "Uncle Sloan, how come I never noticed this good quality of yours before?"
Nathaniel Sloan had a gut feeling that this little rascal wasn’t about to say anything good.
Sure enough, the next moment, Zachery looked at him with an admiring gaze. "This good quality is—you have exceptional self-awareness!"
"That’s right. This really isn’t a good time for you to be here!"
...
It became even quieter.
Luke White and the others all looked as if their lives were flashing before their eyes, but Zachery, seemingly oblivious, said, "Uncle Sloan, I praised you. Aren’t you going to praise me back?"
Nathaniel Sloan: "..."
Nathaniel Sloan was so exasperated he almost laughed. "You’ve got a sharp tongue."
Zachery immediately hid behind Jasper Kingston.
Jasper Kingston shook his head, looking helpless. "He’s just a kid joking around, Nathaniel. Are you also here to see Yara?"
Nathaniel Sloan had no intention of arguing with a child, but he still frowned slightly at Jasper Kingston’s words.
’He’s already calling her Yara?’
Jasper Kingston smiled and spoke again. "I was thinking that Yara might be alone in the hospital with no one to look after her, so I came to check. I didn’t expect you to be so concerned about her as well, Nathaniel."
For some reason, those words ignited a strange fire within Nathaniel Sloan.
’What does he mean, "didn’t expect you to be so concerned about her as well"?’ He was the one who brought Yara Lockwood to the hospital. If you’re going to help someone, you see it through to the end. What was so wrong with him taking care of her!
"You’re not needed here." He shot Jasper Kingston a look, then walked over to Estelle Lockwood. "I’m staying. That’s enough."
Estelle Lockwood’s eyes, which she had just closed, snapped open in irritation. "Mr. Sloan, I think it would be best if we kept some distance. Didn’t you hear what your father-in-law said earlier?"
Jasper Kingston also nodded slightly. "Nathaniel, Yara’s fever hasn’t broken yet. She really needs to rest. If you stay here and the Lockwood Family comes to cause trouble again, how is Yara supposed to recover?"
Nathaniel Sloan’s lips were a tight line, his handsome brows furrowed slightly.
Zachery’s little face was red with excitement. He whispered to Mia, "See? This is what I was talking about—the part where he grovels! The scumbag dad is getting desperate!"
Mia: "..."
Jasper Kingston saw that Estelle Lockwood’s cup was empty and was about to refill it when Nathaniel Sloan suddenly stood up, blocking his way.
Then he forcefully took the cup, his tone even and showing no trace of awkwardness or embarrassment as he said coolly:
"Dr. Lockwood, I believe we made a deal. For the year that you’re treating Christian, I am to be your caretaker, responsible for your three meals a day and looking after you."
"So when you’re sick, it should be my duty as your ’caretaker’ to look after you, shouldn’t it?"
Everyone was stunned. Even Jasper Kingston looked at Estelle Lockwood in surprise.
Estelle Lockwood raised an eyebrow. "Mr. Sloan, so now you remember you’re my caretaker?"
Nathaniel Sloan lifted his eyelids. His eyes were intensely dark, his emotions unreadable.
Jasper Kingston said with a smile, "Nathaniel, you must be joking. You know how to take care of people?"
Nathaniel Sloan gave him a cool glance, then heard Yara Lockwood laugh.
"If he wants to serve people, let him serve. Mr. Kingston, aren’t you tired of standing? Please, have a seat."
Then she glanced at Nathaniel Sloan. "Go get some tea for me and my guest."
She emphasized the words "my guest," propping her chin on her hand with great interest. "Well? Why are you just standing there? Is that how a caretaker is supposed to act?"
Nathaniel Sloan suddenly closed his eyes, suppressed all his emotions, and went to pour two glasses of water.
Estelle Lockwood was not satisfied. "Why isn’t this tea?"
