"Christian, come. Mommy made this soup just for you. Here... Ah!"
Just as Estelle was about to speak, Noelle’s hand suddenly trembled. She deliberately nudged herself closer to Estelle.
At that very moment, the bowl of soup was knocked over with a splash, drenching Noelle.
Nathaniel’s chopsticks paused, and he coolly lifted his eyes to look.
Noelle’s eyes reddened. "Dr. Lockwood, what are you doing? I respect that you’re Christian’s doctor and a guest in this house, so I went out of my way to make your life easier. How could you spill the soup I was trying to give to Christian? I don’t mind that the soup spilled on me, but it also splashed Christian, and a child’s skin is very delicate. What if he got burned?"
After saying that, she put on a heartbroken expression.
"Christian, how are you? Let Mommy see."
Nathaniel noticed that Christian’s hand was already blistering from the burn. His brow furrowed sharply, and he immediately stood up and ordered the butler, "Get the first-aid kit."
Christian flinched away from Noelle’s hand at once, his eyes turning dark. "It had nothing to do with the doctor. You knocked it over on purpose."
Noelle’s heart skipped a beat. Had this little bastard really just seen through her?
"Christian, you..." Noelle bit her lip, feigning helplessness. "Fine, have it your way. I know you like Dr. Lockwood, so it’s only natural that you’d want to cover for her. After all, you were the only one who saw what just happened, Christian. If you stick up for her, no one will believe me, no matter how hard I try to explain myself... Never mind. Who asked me to be your mother, anyway? I can’t possibly blame you for this, can I?"
Christian pressed his lips together tightly while Estelle narrowed her eyes.
She couldn’t believe it. In the five years since she had last seen her, this woman’s ability to play the victim had only gotten better. She was clearly the one who had engineered the whole thing with the soup bowl, and now she was acting like the most innocent person there.
She looked at the expressions on the maids’ faces. They all pitied poor Miss Noelle. She was the young boy’s mother and she tried so very hard, yet he treated her so horribly.
She was always the aggressor, but she always managed to play the victim, turning right into wrong.
Noelle’s eyes welled with tears.
"Christian, it’s all Mommy’s fault. If you don’t want to have the soup, you don’t have to. I know Dr. Lockwood doesn’t like me, but for the sake of your health, I can endure anything."
After saying that, she sniffled, putting on a magnanimous air.
"Dr. Lockwood, if I’ve done something to displease you, you can just tell me directly. There’s no need to resort to such petty tricks at the dinner table and disrupt Nathaniel and Christian’s meal. Alright, alright, I won’t hold this against you. Let’s all just forget about it. I’m going to go get cleaned up. You all go ahead and finish your meal."
Noelle looked so wronged, yet so gracious. Who wouldn’t feel a pang of sympathy for her?
Nathaniel frowned, but just as he was about to speak, he was cut off by a woman’s voice.
"Miss Lockwood, please wait." Estelle had a faint mocking smile on her face. "I’m afraid this isn’t over yet. You can’t leave."
Noelle cried with red eyes, "Dr. Lockwood, don’t take this too far! I already said I would let it go. Wasn’t spilling soup on me enough for you? Now, you won’t even let me go get cleaned up? What do you want from me?"
Estelle raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure I was the one who bumped into you on purpose?"
Noelle looked pitifully innocent. "I told you, I forgive you..."
"There is one thing I’m rather curious about," Estelle said, suddenly smiling. "You’ve been living here for five years, Miss Lockwood. Are you telling me you didn’t know there are security cameras in this house?"
She pointed meaningfully at the ceiling. "I assume Mr. Sloan knows where the cameras are, doesn’t he? Why didn’t you give your fiancée a little heads-up before she did something this foolish, Mr. Sloan?"
The room fell silent.
Nathaniel’s sharp gaze shot to Estelle, his fingertips curling slightly.
How could she have known that there was a camera in there?
An impossible theory slowly surfaced in his mind...
Nathaniel ordered in a deep voice, "Pull up the security footage."
