Nathaniel’s eyes darkened. "I never gave her permission to live in our marital home."
Estelle Lockwood’s playful smile instantly chilled. ’He’s still lying to me, even now!’
’Could it be that everything I saw before was a lie?’
Before the wedding, everyone told her that Nathaniel Sloan was originally Noelle Lockwood’s fiancé, and that she, the country bumpkin, had stolen him away.
After the wedding, Noelle Lockwood had brazenly moved into Imperial Crest. When Estelle couldn’t stand it anymore and confronted her, Noelle feigned surprise and retorted, "Of course, my brother-in-law asked me to move in. Didn’t he tell you?"
’And now... Nathaniel was saying he never gave her permission?’
Estelle Lockwood scoffed and turned to Iris Sloan. "See, Auntie? Never trust a word a man says. They’re all liars."
Iris Sloan wasn’t inclined to give her nephew an easy time, either.
’How could he even say something like that? It doesn’t take a genius to know that no woman would invite another woman to come live in her own home after getting married.’
Especially since the whole city knew Noelle Lockwood was in love with Nathaniel Sloan!
Estelle wasn’t insane; she wouldn’t bring Noelle home just to watch her own husband and little sister be all lovey-dovey.
"This place reeks of fake innocence. I’ve lost my appetite. Yara, let’s go eat next door."
Iris Sloan stood up, grabbed her bag, and left. Estelle Lockwood nodded and followed her out the door.
Nathaniel Sloan’s lips tightened into a thin line. He waited until their figures had vanished before turning his cold gaze on Noelle Lockwood.
Seeing that the troublemakers were gone, Noelle put on a shy expression. "Nathaniel..."
"Back then, Estelle said you weren’t feeling well. President and Mrs. Lockwood were on a business trip at the time, and she was worried about you, so she brought you to Imperial Crest. Is that how it happened?"
Noelle Lockwood’s scalp tightened, but she maintained her gentle demeanor. "Brother-in-law, I’m not clear on the specifics myself. All I know is that my sister suddenly called and asked me to move to Imperial Crest..."
At this, tears welled up in Noelle Lockwood’s eyes. "Brother-in-law, did someone say something to you? Do you think I threatened my sister back then, deliberately moving into your home just to cause problems for you both?"
Nathaniel’s gaze remained heavy.
Noelle Lockwood looked as if she’d been gravely misunderstood, her tears falling like rain. "How could I ever be that kind of person? Besides, you wouldn’t doubt something my sister told you herself, would you?"
’He was right. What Estelle had said back then wouldn’t have been a lie.’
’But Yara...’
"Nathaniel, since your aunt has left, should I stay and eat with you?" Noelle Lockwood didn’t want to let this opportunity slip by.
Nathaniel turned away coldly. "That won’t be necessary."
He showed Noelle Lockwood no courtesy whatsoever, leaving her behind in the private room.
Noelle Lockwood’s chest heaved with rage. Her gentle, proper mask fell away completely. With a sinister expression, she stormed forward and swept all the dishes off the table and onto the floor.
’Yara... Just you wait!’
’Sooner or later, I will drive that meddling woman out!’
...
Estelle Lockwood and Iris Sloan got a new private room next door and ordered a few dishes.
It was already midnight when Estelle returned to Imperial Crest.
"I’m telling you, with these headaches of yours, why don’t you see a few more doctors?"
The moment she walked in the door, she heard Zane Grant’s voice.
Zane Grant was standing beside Nathaniel Sloan, dressed in a white lab coat and holding some sort of instrument.
He had clearly been called over to treat Nathaniel’s illness.
