Before leaving, he couldn’t help but add a careful warning. “Ms. Myers, just keep this to yourself. Since Mr. Ashford didn’t invite you, it’s better if you pretend you don’t know. This deal–whether we get it or not–means a lot to Mr. Ashford.”
He stressed the word “lot,” hoping Sophia would understand what was at stake.
But Sophia was too wrapped up in her own feelings. His words only grated on her nerves.
Pretend I don’t know?
Is he telling me how to act?
She lifted her chin, saying coldly, “I got it. You don’t need to spell it out.”
Trevor left with his tail between his legs, not daring to say another word.
Sophia, meanwhile, was fuming.
I’m going to be Mrs. Ashford one day.
This is my chance to get close to the Torres Group–to pave the way for my future with Lucas. No way I’m letting Riley, that outsider, have it.
In the evening, Riley rode home in Lucas‘ car.
Sophia sat in the back. Several times, she wanted to say something–break the awkward silence with Lucas. But with Riley there, she swallowed every word.
Riley sat comfortably, calm as ever, as if the tension in the car had nothing to do with her.
The more relaxed she looked, the more restless Sophia became.
Then Riley’s phone rang.
It was Caleb.
She picked up immediately. “Caleb?”
Lucas and Sophia both went stiff at the same time.
On the other end of the line, Caleb asked with concern, “Riley, how are you feeling today? Did you go back to the office?”
Riley’s gaze flicked briefly to the rearview mirror. She offered a faint smile, but her voice stayed sweet and obedient. “Don’t worry. I’m much better. I went back to work today. Everything’s fine.”
“Good” Caleb sounded genuinely relieved. He gave her a few more reminders to take care of herself, then hung up.
The car fell silent again.
Riley put her phone back in her bag. Her eyes landed on Sophia’s back–stiff as a board. She put on a concerned voice and asked softly, “Sophia, you look so tense. Are you scared of Caleb?”

Sophia’s face went pale. She didn’t know how to answer.
Just as her discomfort peaked, Lucas spoke up.
“Grandpa was always hard on Sophia,” he said. “He had high expectations.
“So, it’s normal for her to get nervous hearing his name.”
“Oh! I see.” Riley said, dragging out the last word. Her tone carried so many layers that it was hard to read.
She didn’t ask anything else. She just smiled softly, leaned back in her seat, and closed her eyes.

The next morning, Lucas was dressed and ready to go. He glanced at Sophia, who was also prepared, and said coldly, “Go to the office yourself today. Riley and I have business elsewhere.”
Sophia didn’t look upset at all. She didn’t even ask questions. “Okay. Got it. Drive safe,” she said, sweet and agreeable.
Lucas had prepared a whole explanation, but her easy acceptance left him with nothing to say.
It feels… off.
But he didn’t think too much about it.

At the suburban golf course, Lucas showed up with Riley, but his mood was far from sunny.
He knew he had to secure at least a preliminary deal with Sebastian today. This was a key move to play before Caleb returned.
But when he walked with Riley toward the reserved meeting area, he stopped dead in his tracks.
Not far away, on the practice green, a woman in bright pink golf attire was practicing her putting.
Her figure was familiar–way too familiar. His temples started throbbing.
Sophia.
What the hell is she doing here?
As if sensing their gaze, Sophia turned around at just the right moment.
