The mysterious person everyone had been whispering about–that turned out to be this young woman? The same one who’d just been humiliated here?
The guard’s heart jumped straight into his throat. His hand trembled as he held the invitation. He couldn’t help but test the waters. “Miss,” he said carefully, “are you sure this invitation belongs to you?”
Riley gave him a cold glance. Her red lips parted slightly.
“My last name is Harper,” she said. “What do you think?”
The guard’s brain completely short–circuited.
He immediately realized how stupid and rude his nosy attitude had been.
“I’m so sorry, Ms. Harper! I-” The guard stumbled over his words, apologizing nonstop. He quickly bowed and stepped aside to clear the path for her. “Please–right this way!”
Riley gave a small nod and walked straight in.
By then, the peak arrival time for the banquet had already passed. No one else was at the entrance.
So Riley’s return went completely unnoticed.
All those guests already inside, clinking glasses and making small talk–none of them had any idea that the woman they’d laughed off as a pathetic wannabe had just slipped back in.
Meanwhile, in a private lounge on the other side of the banquet hall, Sophia was fixing her makeup in front of the mirror, looking perfectly pleased with herself.
It had been so long since Riley left. She still hadn’t come back. Sophia figured that she must have been so humiliated that she ran off crying somewhere.
That thought made Sophia feel wonderful. Even her own reflection looked more radiant to her.
She smiled smugly and carefully took a jewelry box out of her bag.
This was the real highlight of the night.
She was going to use Lucas‘ one–of–a–kind affection for her as the perfect finishing touch to her victory.
Her heart racing with excitement, she opened the box.
But the moment she saw what was inside, her smile froze just a little.
The diamond jewelry sparkled under the lights–gorgeous, luxurious.
Except that the custom design at the center of each piece was a blooming magnolia flower.
Magnolias?
Sophia frowned. She loved bold, passionate roses. When had she ever liked something as simple and elegant as magnolias?

But the thought came and went.
She immediately found an excuse for Lucas.
He must have picked a pattern he likes himself.
He’s so steady and reserved. Of course, he’d go for something understated like magnolias.
With that, her brief annoyance vanished completely.
she turned even this small compromise into proof of his love. Then she put on the whole diamond set without a second thought.
Once it was all on, she turned side to side in front of the mirror, admiring herself. That’s when she noticed something surprising- ucked in the velvet groove at the bottom of the box was a huge diamond ring, also shaped like a magnolia.
Sophia stopped breathing.
ring meant more than any necklace or earrings.
Suddenly, she felt like every bit of suffering she’d gone through for Lucas had been worth it.
Her hands shaking, she slid the ring onto her finger. She stared at the dazzling light–and felt her eyes get a little wet.
io Lucas never said anything out loud. But he’d already prepared this amazing surprise for me.
ust then, the lounge door opened.
ucas walked in after finishing some small talk with business partners. “Sophia, is my phone with you?”
s soon as he stepped inside, his eyes landed on the overly flashy diamond jewelry Sophia was wearing.
le didn’t remember that set. But he knew for a fact that Sophia could never afford custom jewelry like that on her own.
le frowned. “Those diamonds… Did you rent them?”
Of course not!” Sophia shot him a playful look. “Lucas, how could you forget? This is the set you said you were having custom- nade for me. It just arrived today. I was worried Riley might get the wrong idea if she saw it, so I waited until now to put it on.”
ucas‘ eyes stopped on the diamond magnolia at her neck.
But magnolias…
