Then she gave Riley a sympathetic look and hurried off.

Soon, the entrance of the banquet hall went quiet again.

Riley was left alone in the cold wind. The streetlight stretched her shadow out long and lonely.

Then Aiden’s voice came from beside her.

“Mrs. Ashford,” he said, “need me to arrange a car for you?”

Riley turned her head. Aiden had walked over at some point. He’d clearly been enjoying the show.

She gave him a cold look. “Mr. Quinn, call me Riley.”

Aiden paused for a second. Then his smile grew wider.

He raised an eyebrow and was about to say something–but Riley’s phone rang.

It was Sebastian.

She answered. A deep voice came through the line. “Leave the venue and walk one hundred sixty–five feet to the right. I’m here.”

Riley blinked.

Hasn’t Sebastian left early?

Why is he still here?

She didn’t have time to think it through. “Okay,” she said.

Riley hung up and turned down Aiden’s offer flat out. “No need, Mr. Quinn. I have my own ride.”

Then she walked off without looking back, heading in the direction Sebastian had told her.

Aiden stood there, watching her leave with clear interest.

One of his men stepped up and asked quietly, “Should we follow her?”

“No.” Aiden waved his hand.

He turned slowly and walked back into the bright banquet hall. His eyes turned cold again.

I don’t need to follow her to know who is picking her up.

She walked up and opened the back door.

The overhead light was off. Only the glow from the dashboard screen lit up the inside–just enough to show the sharp lines of his profile.

Sebastian was sitting there, like he’d been waiting a long time.

His tie was loose. Two buttons of his shirt were undone.

“Are you okay?” His voice came through the quiet car.

Riley shook her head. Her voice came out a little rough. “I’m fine.”

She closed her eyes for a second. “I just don’t know who set all of this up tonight.”

A dark look flickered through Sebastian’s eyes–fast.

“Plenty of people would enjoy watching Lucas make a fool of himself,” he said flatly.

Riley asked another question. “I thought you already left. Why are you still here?”

She paused, then added, “Sophia said she ran into you. Said you two… chatted for a while. Do you know her?”

The atmosphere in the car shifted slightly.
