But another thought crossed her mind quickly. “You’re not worried Lucas might figure out he overpaid and try to return it?”

Sebastian’s reply carried that same casual arrogance. “Let him try. I control every exclusive exotic car dealership in this city. Selling them’s never been an issue.

“If he’s dumb enough to show up demanding a refund, I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the front page of tomorrow’s paper.”

Riley could picture him on the other end–lazy, indifferent, those cool eyes barely focused on the screen.

She sent back a thumbs–up emoji.

Just as she was about to set the phone down, it buzzed again.

Sebastian added, “Oh. And I had someone give that used Audi some special attention too.”

Riley raised an eyebrow. “What kind of attention?”

“Nothing major. Seats were replaced recently.”

“Turns out the previous owner was some guy’s mistress. Got confronted by the wife last month. Tried to off herself in the car.”

Riley’s lips curved.

Sebastian played by his own rules. And somehow, his mind worked in the same twisted way hers did.

She caught herself and straightened.

This marriage–it wasn’t about love. It was a transaction. Mutual benefit. Nothing more.

Transactions required terms. Agreements. Clear boundaries so nothing got messy later.

She typed out another message. “Free tomorrow night? I’d like to take you to dinner.”

Sebastian replied instantly, “Sure.”

Riley said, “I’ll send you the address once I pick a place.”

Meanwhile, across the house, Lucas had slipped quietly into Jeremy’s room. He settled onto the edge of the bed.

The boy’s face was still streaked with tears. He sniffled softly in his sleep.

He looked so small. So vulnerable.

Lucas had seen the surveillance footage. He knew Jeremy had lied. But sitting there, watching his son’s innocent face relax into sleep, he couldn’t bring himself to feel anger.

He stayed until Jeremy’s breathing evened out completely.

But his mind kept drifting back to Riley. The way she’d looked in the hallway. The heat in her eyes.

He wanted to get back to her.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, keeping his voice low.

Sophia stepped closer, letting her vulnerability show. “Lucas… I can’t shake the feeling Riley was deliberately trying to humiliate me today. What if she knows something?”

Lucas‘ brow flickered. A flash of irritation.

He understood–she was still stung by the used car.

“She doesn’t know anything,” he said flatly. “Riley trusts me. She’s not the type to invent reasons to doubt us.”

His voice softened. “Even if she was upset about the chestnut cake thing, asking you to keep a low profile was still the right call. It’s for your own good too.”
