“Honestly, Sebastian, if you ended up marrying Elsie, it’d be a solid match. I’ve met her a handful of times-quiet, down-to-earth, well-educated. Top-tier graduate, launched her own luxury fashion label while she was still in her twenties. She’s got a great reputation in our circles.”
He took a sip of his wine, let it sit on his tongue for a second, and kept going. “Sure, she’s not a Harper by blood. But when it comes to talent, looks, and how she was raised? She’s miles ahead of that country girl who just showed up out of nowhere.”
He might as well have said it straight out-he had zero respect for Riley.
“Thud.”
A heavy, dull sound cut Dylan off mid-sentence.
Sebastian had set his crystal glass down a little too hard on the table.
Everyone around the table flinched.
Sebastian’s expression had gone cold. He leaned back in his chair, his sharp gaze sweeping over every elder seated there.
“I don’t need anyone here worrying about who I marry.”
His tone was firm, leaving no room for debate.
“I’ve already agreed to get engaged to the actual Harper daughter. Her background, her upbringing, even her personality-none of that is an issue for me.”
He paused, and his eyes turned even sharper.
“From now on, I don’t want to hear anyone gossiping about my fiancée. Especially not where I
an hear it.”
Sebastian might have been young, but since taking over Torres Group from his father, he’d been decisive and relentless. He’d built unquestionable authority, both inside the company and out.
The elders around the table might have been his seniors, but when it came to real influence, none of them could touch him. Right then, even a flicker of anger from him was enough to make those seasoned old foxes shift uncomfortably in their seats.
Dylan’s face paled, then flushed red. The hand holding his wine glass trembled slightly. Finally, he forced out a dry, awkward laugh. “Heh… Well, I didn’t realize you felt so strongly about this. That’s… very honorable of you.”
The mood around the table turned stifling.
But another elder still didn’t seem to fully get it.
He looked right at Sebastian and asked, “So who were you texting so intently earlier?”
Sebastian picked up his phone again, thumb brushing lightly over the cool glass screen. Then he looked up, a slow, meaningfur smile spreading across his face.
“Who else?” He let the words hang in the air for a beat. “The very Ms. Harper you all seem to think is so uncultured and embarrassing.”

The reaction was instant-a wave of shocked murmurs swept the table.
Dylan’s face turned the deep purple of overripe plums.
It was more humiliating than a slap in the face.
And Sebastian clearly didn’t think that slap had been loud enough.

He added, voice calm and deliberate, “And I think everyone here should remember-the Torres family doesn’t have a history of straying in marriage.”
That landed like a final blow.
Everyone around the table looked deeply uneasy.
The Torres family was one of the oldest and wealthiest in the city. Plenty of people wanted a piece of that empire, and marriage was the easiest way in.
But the Torres men were different.
From Sebastian’s grandfather to his father, every one of them had chosen their own wife. And once married, they stayed fiercely loyal-no scandals, no affairs, decade after decade. In their world of high society, full of pretense and hidden agendas, that kind of devotion was almost unheard of.
By bringing up family values, Sebastian was sending a clear message. Keep your cynical calculations away from my marriage.
The one I choose is the only one.
