Chapter 210 A Dangerous Walk

“That’s about all we can manage,” Anne and Calvin said, their reluctance evident.

Around noon, the team grabbed a quick lunch at the site’s temporary mess hall. The food was nothing special, but no one really cared much at that point.

After eating, Riley mentioned she wanted to head back to her trailer to rest for a while.

She pushed the door open, stepped inside, and closed it behind her. Just as she was about to draw the curtains, she froze mid-

step.

Her eyes swept sharply across the room-the bed, the desk, the chairs, along with the basic toiletries she’d brought and a few books.

Everything looked pretty much the same as when she’d left that morning, but something felt off.

Her pulse quickened.

The Backpack she’d brought was originally by the foot of the bed, but now it was propped against the headboard.

The mug on the desk-she clearly remembered it facing upright-was now turned upside down.

Even the open book she’d left by her pillow seemed to have a slightly different crease on the page.

The changes were subtle. If she didn’t have a sharp memory and a near-obsessive habit of noting where she placed things, most people would never have noticed.

But Riley was sure. Someone had been in her room after she left and had gone through her things.

A chill went through her.

She hurried to the door, pulled it open, and spotted Sean Coleman, the site foreman, passing by in the hallway.

“Sean!” Riley called out, her expression serious. “Did anyone enter my room after I left this morning?”

Sean was taken aback by her tone. “Oh, Ms. Harper-that was probably the cleaner assigned to tidy up the trailers. She comes by every day. Nothing to worry about. This site is covered with security cameras, you’re completely safe here.”

His explanation sounded reasonable enough. Naturally, a site foreman would want the contractor’s rep to feel secure and well looked after.

Riley nodded on the surface, accepting his answer for now. She thanked him and stepped back inside.

But as soon as the door shut, that uneasy feeling crept back.

A cleaner?

She thought back carefully. When she’d left that morning, the place was already tidy. There wasn’t much that needed cleaning. For a moment, she considered asking Sean to install a camera right outside her door.

But then she reconsidered if someone really was trying to get in, making a fuss might just tip them off.

Besides, if she was just being paranoid and Sean or the crew caught wind of it, they might think she was overreacting or difficult to work with, which could sour their cooperation down the line.

With that in mind, Riley pulled out her phone and quickly texted Vincent.

“Vincent, I need a small indoor hidden cam that livestreams to my phone. Have someone reliable bring it to me–don’t go through the company.”

She trusted Vincent’s skills in matters like these. He was far better at this kind of thing than she was.

After sending the message, Riley paced around the room a few more times, her eyes lingering on the items that had been moved.

She walked over to the door, gently plucked a strand of hair from her head, and used a tiny piece of clear tape to fix it discreetly in the gap between the door and the frame-hidden well enough that anyone opening the door without looking closely would dislodge or break it.

Only after doing all that did she feel somewhat more at ease. She stuck to her original plan: walk around the village a bit and see if she could pick up any other clues.

As Riley stepped out of the trailer, Harvey-who’d been keeping an eye out-immediately approached.
