Chapter 237 Conflicting Stories
Chapter 237 Conflicting Stories
It left her unsettled, yet somehow she couldn’t pull away.
Almost without realizing it, the words slipped out. “Sebastian… did you do all of this because you like me?”
The moment she spoke, the room fell into a thick, heavy silence.
All she could hear was the faint sound of their breathing mixing in the quiet air.

Riley’s heart thudded hard against her ribs. She instantly regretted being so forward-and yet, part of her was desperate to hear what he would say.
Sebastian’s posture stiffened almost imperceptibly.
His eyes lingered on her face for what felt like forever, before a faint, slow smile touched the corner of his mouth.
“Riley,” he said, his voice low and deliberate, “if you want my answer, you’ll have to give me yours first.”
The reply caught her completely off guard.
She’d expected a flat denial, or maybe a brush-off-not him turning the question right back on her.
She knew Sebastian had done a lot for her. He’d saved her life, more than once. On paper, he was even her fiancé.
She felt grateful to him, respected him, and yes-she’d grown to rely on him, especially with the way he’d looked after her so carefully these past few months.
But like him? Deep down, she still felt… nothing.
To her, their engagement was just a business arrangement. He was a trusted ally, not someone she’d given her heart to.
Riley lowered her gaze, breaking away from his intense stare.
Being so transparent in front of him left her feeling uncomfortably exposed
She tried to focus elsewhere, but her mind kept drifting back to those strange, fragmented flashes from the night before
At the height of her intoxication, she’d been utterly delirious, acting on nothing but raw instinct as she pressed her ups to his fevered skin and kissed him deeply.
And he hadn’t pushed her away.
Just thinking about it now made her head feel like it was about to explode
God, this is… beyond awkward.
She kept telling herself it had to be a hallucination, just her messed up memory playing tricks on her it couldn’t have been real
But even as she tried to convince herself, the raw embarrassment of him witnessing her in such a vulnerable state washed over her
in waves.
Sebastian didn’t miss the blush spreading across her cheeks.

“You’re blushing,” he noted, his tone lightly amused
“No, I’m not!”
Riley flinched and accidentally pressed down too hard on the wound she was bandaging
The cotton swab dug into the injury. She expected him to wince, or at least make a sound but Sebastian didn’t reart at all he just watched her calmly, his eyes soft with something that looked like indulgence.
Exactly like he’d said earlier-he could handle more pain than most people.
Riley finished dressing the wound as quickly as she could.
The fresh white gauze covered the bite marks on his thumb again, hiding the ugly indentation of teeth-but it did nothing to hide he new tension hanging between them.
Something had shifted overnight, quietly but unmistakably.
Right in the middle of that uneasy quiet, Riley’s phone-which had been charging in the bedroom-started ringing.
Srateful for the distraction, she pulled her hands back and nearly jogged to answer it.
‘Riley! Oh my God, where are you? Are you okay? What happened last night? They said we were drugged at dinner-something bout criminals targeting us. I was so scared!”
Anne’s voice spilled out of the phone, rushed and anxious.
Criminals?” Riley repeated, confused.
t sounded like Anne had no idea what really went down.
Who told you we were targeted by criminals?” Riley pressed.
Harvey did!” Anne replied quickly. “He said we were drugged last night by some gang or something. He told me he ran out alone
o chase them down and try to save you-he even got hurt in the process…
iley’s frown deepened.
Harvey?
Criminals?
Her memories from last night were blurry, but a few moments stood out sharp and clear, burned into her mind
The person who tried to take her away was Devin, the mayor of Cedar Creek
And Harvey… what had he actually done last night?
Why was the story Anne was telling her so different from what she herself remembered?
“Riley… are you really okay? Did anything… happen to you last night?” Anne’s voice came through again, hesitant and careful in that way people get when they’re tiptoeing around something uncomfortable.
It was that tone-the unspoken assumption that something bad must have happened to a woman who’d been taken away- that,
