Harvey and Sophia kept feeding off each other’s performance, sobbing and carrying on as they eagerly threw blame on Riley–who wasn’t even there to defend herself.
Their story sounded airtight; every detail lined up, down to the timing and location.
Harvey’s mention of Cedar Creek especially cut deep for Lucas.
Cedar Creek again.
Ever since coming back from there, Riley had been especially distant toward him.
“Lucas, are you hearing this?!” Anthea jumped in as if she’d finally caught Riley in the act. “I told you that girl is trouble! A walking disaster! Sophia was kind enough to help her upstairs, and this is how she repays her–by setting up something so dirty to make Sophia look bad!”
Lucas‘ chest heaved, the pulse at his temple throbbing visibly.
He stared hard at the two pathetic figures on the bed, his glare hot enough to burn.
But strangely, beneath the anger, his mind felt clearer than ever.
Anthea’s outburst, Harvey’s claims, Sophia’s tears… it all felt too neat, too rehearsed Something didn’t sit right.
Sure, he’d had his doubts about Riley before, but a stubborn voice inside him insisted she wasn’t that kind of person.
She was proud, reserved. She wouldn’t resort to cheap tricks to hurt someone, and she’d never look twice at someone like Harvey.
More importantly–if this really was Riley’s trap, then where was she?
This was supposed to be her room, yet Riley was nowhere in sight.
Something was definitely off.
“Enough, Lucas cut off Anthea before she could go on.
He turned to a pale–faced staff member nearby and ordered sharply, “Go find her. Now. I want to know where my wife is.
A few minutes later, just as the room had frozen into an icy silence, the staff member hurried back, out of breath. “I found her! Mrs. Ashford… she’s asleep in the master bedroom.”
The master bedroom?
Everyone stared in disbelief.

Harvey and Sophia. “Get yourselves dressed first. This is disgraceful.”

Then he turned to Lucas. “Go wake Riley and bring her here. But hear her out–ask what happened from her side. Get the full story. Don’t jump to conclusions.”
“Understood, Grandfather.”
Lucas‘ voice was rough as he turned and strode toward the master bedroom.
His heart pounded, his thoughts tangled.
He didn’t know what he was about to face–another lie, or maybe a truth he couldn’t bear.
He pushed open the door to the master bedroom. The room was still.
There, on their large bed, lay Riley, still in the dress she’d worn to dinner. Her breathing was even, her face peaceful, as if the storm tearing through the Ashford family had nothing to do with her.
Lucas pushed down the turmoil inside and walked slowly to the bedside. He tested her name softly, “Riley?”
No movement.
His heart sank. He called again, a little louder, several times.
Still, Riley didn’t stir.
Only then did he realize something was wrong
She was too still–unnaturally still
Alarm bells rang in Lucas‘ mind. He quickly checked her breathing, then felt her forehead. His expression shifted sharply.
Riley wasn’t just asleep. She was unconscious.
“Call an ambulance. Now!”
Soon, the family doctor and an ambulance arrived one after the other.
After an emergency check, the doctor looked at Lucas gravely and confirmed trace amounts of ketamine in Riley’s system–what was commonly called a date–rape drug.
