Lucas stood completely still.

Oh, please. Was he really going to blame everything on Sophia forcing his hand?

If he was truly being blackmailed, why wouldn’t he find a way to end it for good instead of letting her push him around over and over–making him do things he never wanted to do?

He was no saint, after all.

But just as he stood there, throat tight, scrambling for a better excuse to defend himself, a sharp, tearful cry cut through the silence from outside the study.

“Mommy! Mommy’s bleeding everywhere! Waaah…”

Lucas jolted. All the pitiful desperation from moments before–kneeling, pleading–vanished, replaced by pure panic.

He could hate Sophia, he could be disgusted by her, but he couldn’t just ignore her… or Jeremy.

He shot up from the floor and blurted to Riley, “Let me go check–just wait, okay? I’ll explain everything when I get back!”

Before the words were fully out, he rushed out of the study like a man possessed.

Riley didn’t move. She didn’t even blink.

She watched the man who’d just been on his knees, swearing his honesty, now turn and bolt for another woman without a second thought. The smirk at the corner of her mouth turned icy.

Lucas sprinted into the living room, scooped up Jeremy–who was crying so hard he could barely breathe, one small finger pointing toward Sophia’s room–and shoved the door open.

What he saw made his blood run cold.

Sophia lay crumpled on the carpet beside her bed, face pale as a sheet. A dark, spreading stain soaked into the cream–colored rug beneath her.

From her limp wrist, a deep cut still seeped blood. It looked bad. Really bad.

“Sophia!”

Julian and Anthea, who’d hurried over, froze at the gruesome sight. Anthea’s legs buckled; she nearly collapsed.

“Sophia!” she cried, rushing over to cradle her daughter’s head. “How could you do this? Whatever’s wrong. we could have talked it out! Are you trying to scare us to death? We’re still family, for God’s sake!”

The words “still family” drifted up to Riley, leaning against the second–floor railing. They sounded like a bad punchline.

By then, Caleb had been woken by the commotion and made his way over, leaning heavily on his cane.

He’d seen plenty in his lifetime. Taking in the scene, he was the first to snap into action. “Don’t just stand there!” he barked at the butler. “Call 911–now!”

Then his sharp eyes landed on Lucas, who looked utterly lost. His voice dropped, low and commanding. “Keep this quiet. Close the doors. She’s a public figure–if word gets out she tried to kill herself, do you have any idea what it would do to the family’s reputation?”

The whole household was in chaos.

Soon, the wail of an ambulance pierced the quiet night.

Paramedics rushed in with a stretcher.

Finally shaking into motion, Lucas bent down, gathered Sophia’s unconscious form into his arms, and carried her out.

Julian picked up a still–whimpering Jeremy, holding him close. Anthea followed, wiping her eyes, stumbling in her steps. Behind them came Caleb, face grim, footsteps heavy. The entire family piled into cars, heading for the hospital together.

The grand villa fell silent again as the ambulance sirens faded into the distance.

Riley had stayed in the shadows upstairs the whole time–an outsider watching the absurd drama unfold below.

Playing the victim. Using a child as a pawn. Sophia’s moves were still so cheap.

And yet, the whole Ashford family had bought it.

She watched the flashing red and blue lights disappear down the street, then slowly turned and walked back to that bedroom–the one that felt just as suffocating as the scene downstairs.

Ten minutes later, under cover of darkness, Riley left without a backward glance.

By the time her car rolled smoothly into the underground garage, it was already late.

The garage was empty and still. Only her headlights cut through the gloom, lighting the way to her parking spot.

Away from the Ashfords, even this cold, concrete space seemed to breathe with a sense of freedom.

Riley didn’t get out right away. She turned off the engine and sat quietly in the driver’s seat for a long

moment,

Outside was the endless night. Inside the car, perfect silence. It gave her tangled thoughts room to unravel.

Everything from the evening replayed in her mind like some bizarre silent film.

All she did was give a faint, humorless smile and push the door open.
