She raised her voice, sharp and unyielding. “If you don’t agree, I’ll go straight to the press. My reputation’s already in the gutter- one more scandal won’t break me. But your family? The Ashford name means something. A mess like this goes public and isn’t handled right, your stock’s going to plunge. Your standing in this town–gone.”
Lucas stared, completely thrown.
The woman in front of him, face twisted and frantic, bore no resemblance to the gentle, accommodating person he thought he
knew.
“Sophia…” His lips trembled as if he were truly seeing her for the first time. Is this… who you really are?”
Anthea’s eyes welled up. “Sophia, honey… is this what you really think? All those years you were so sweet with us–so considerate…”
‘No,” Sophia cut in, her tone brittle. “I never wanted it to come to this. But I was naive before You told me to be patient, so I was. That’s how Riley kept walking all over me. Now my name’s mud online. Everybody’s turned on me. If I don’t look out for myself an Jeremy now, we’ve got nothing left.”
‘Enough! Just stop!” Caleb’s voice boomed, snapping out of his stunned silence. “Even if you did file that marriage license, this ‘amily will never accept a woman who uses her own child and our reputation as bargaining chips. You are not stepping foot in an Ashford home again.”
He finally turned to Lucas. Disappointment weighed heavy in his gaze, but beneath it was the raw hurt of a parent watching everything they’d built fall apart.
‘Lucas… all these years, everything we gave you. How could you let this happen?”
With that, Caleb turned and strode out of the room without a backward glance.
His father’s exit seemed to break something in Lucas.
He looked at Sophia–pale but defiant–and felt fury rush to his head.
He stepped forward, hand rising to strike her.
The air whistled, but Sophia’s bandaged wrist–still tinged with fresh blood–shot up to block the blows before it landed
She winced, her face going whiter.
“Go ahead, hit me!” she screamed, voice ragged. “You’re so in love with Riley, aren’t you? Think you’re some stand up guy‘ Then do it–right in front of your parents—hit your lawful wife! Hit the mother of your son! I dare you!”
Lucas‘ hand hung frozen midair. The blind rage that had taken over flickered, choked by her raw, frantic cry. He was trapped
If he hit her, he’d be exactly what she wanted a man who beats his sick wife
If he lowered his hand, the anger would sit inside him, simmering, ready to tear him apart.
Nust then, Anthea rushed over in tears, grabbing his arm.

Lucas, honey–calm down. Please….don’t. Look at her wrist–it’s bleeding again!”
Lucas followed his mother’s gaze to Sophia’s raised–arm.
A bright, fresh red was already spreading through the clean white bandage.
Slowly, he lowered his hand, chest heaving.

The fire in his eyes faded, replaced by a cold, clear clarity. It was like he was finally seeing her–truly seeing past the gentle act to the greed and desperation coiled beneath.
“Sophia. Are you satisfied now?” His words came out low, edged with bitterness. “You think even if I lose it all–even if I’ve got nothing left–I still have to parade you around as Mrs. Ashford, don’t you?”
Each syllable felt ground between his teeth, dripping with scorn.
Sophia leaned back against the headboard, pale but unwavering.
She met his icy stare and nodded without flinching.
