Chapter 357 Marketing Director
Raymond couldn’t hold back a soft short of laughter.
He quickly covered it with a light cough, though the amusement in his eyes remained unmistakable.

Getting to his feet, Raymond moved closer to Zavier, adopting a peacemaking tone. “Dad, there’s no need to get so upset over this.
“What really matters is letting Riley and Sebastian spend time together and build something real. That’s what’ll strengthen both families going forward. Whether she lives here or not isn’t the point.
“Besicles, Riley’s going to be working at the company soon enough. You’ll see her at the office every day–it’s not like she’ll be far away.‘
Just like that, Zavier’s focus shifted. The sting of feeling like his daughter was being taken from him faded by more than half.
He was right—even if she didn’t live under his roof, she’d be right there in the building, just a few floors away. Wasn’t that almost the same thing?
At that thought, Zavier’s expression softened. He looked over at Riley, and though he still felt a tug of retuctance, his voice was noticeably calmer.
“Alright, if you young folks have your own plans, I won’t stand in your way. But Riley, promise me this–even if you’re not living here, you’ll still come by for dinner often. Deal?”
Melissa’s face took on a puzzled, almost wary look when she heard Riley would be working at Harper Group.
Her eyes swept over Riley, lingering with clear skepticism.
“Working at the company?” she echoed, her tone lifting in surprise/“What’s a girl like Riley going to do there? Corporate jobs are exhausting–and honestly, such a hassle. Wouldn’t your time be better spent joining me for lunch, shopping, or getting a spa treatment? It’s not like this family needs the paycheck. Why put yourself through all that stress?”
Her words carried that oldschool, uppercrust attitude–the kind that saw a woman’s place as marrying well, tending to home and family, and enjoying the comforts of life.
Business and careers were, in her view, a man’s domain.
Riley had been away for twenty years, living what Melissa assumed was an ordinary, even humble life. What could she possibly know about the corporate world?
Elsie put on a concerned expression and chimed in softly, “Mom has a point. It’s really competitive at the company, Riley. And Harper Group has such high standards–even an entrylevel assistant usually needs a degree from a top–tier school. What kind of position were you thinking of, anyway?”
But this time, before Riley could respond, Raymond’s simmering irritation finally boiled over.
“An entrylevel assistant? Is that what you think she’s after? What do you actually know about Riley?
“Let me make this clear–before coming back to Nexopolis, Riley was the marketing director of a publicly traded company. She built her team from the ground up and grew their market share to top three in the industry. The deals she’s closed and the budgets she’s managed are worth more than everything hanging in your closet combined.”

What?!” Melissa’s jaw went slack.

Marketing director? A publicly traded company? To her, it sounded like something out of a movie.
Elsie looked as if she’d been struck by lightning. A tremble ran through her, one she couldn’t suppress.
The pride she’d taken in her degree, the sense of superiority that came with interning at Harper Group–all of it crumbled to dust in the face of Raymond’s revelation. Not even a trace remained.
She’d always assumed Riley was just another pretty face riding on the family name, with nothing real to back it up. It had never occurred to her that Riley had been operating on a level she couldn’t even dream of reaching.
Sebastian glanced at his watch. It was about time to go.
He rose smoothly, every movement relaxed and polished. Reaching out with those long, elegant fingers, he gently took Riley’s hand–a casual, familiar gesture.
“We should get going if we’re meeting everyone,” he said quietly, using the prearranged cue.
After all the backandforth, Riley had no desire to linger in this complicated family dynamic any longer.
She gave his hand a light squeeze in understanding, offered a polished smile, and nodded. “Alright.”
Turning to Zavier, Melissa, and a stillpale Elsie, she added, “Sebastian and I are meeting some of his friends tonight, so I won’t be staying for dinner.”
