“Being my assistant comes with high standards,” Riley said slowly. “In my team, assistants must have a business degree from a top overseas university. At least a master’s. On top of that, they need to have independently led or deeply participated in projects worth over a hundred million dollars–at least ten of them.

“Oh, and they also need to be fluent in at least four languages. Go ask Elsie–looking at her resume, how many of these requirements does she meet? If she checks every box, I’d have no problem with it. In fact, I’d welcome someone that talented.”

Melissa sat there, stunned. She couldn’t even speak for a moment.

She had thought–sisters in the same department, the experienced one helping the new one–that was just common sense.

“Do you even meet those requirements yourself?” Melissa shot back, her voice full of doubt. “If you’re setting the bar that high, what about you?”

Riley met her gaze calmly. Her eyes were steady–and absolutely confident.

She said, “I set the bar where it is because my own achievements are higher than that. If you don’t believe me, do you want to see my diplomas now? Or the records of all the projects I led in Havenbrook?”

Melissa was completely choked. Her face went red, then pale.

She decided Riley was deliberately making things hard–humiliating Elsie, really.

“Why are you bringing all this corporate nonsense into a family matter?” Melissa stood up, her voice rising. “The truth is, you’re scared, aren’t you? You’re afraid Elsie will outshine you. Afraid everyone will see she’s better than you. That’s why you’re doing everything you can to keep her out of the company.”

Riley let out a soft, mocking laugh.

“Someone like me–no family connections, got here on my own skills–I’m the last person who’s scared of being outshined.” She stood up and looked down at Melissa, who was half a head shorter. “In business, everyone earns their spot based on ability. You think making Elsie my assistant is no big deal. Let me ask you something–if her lack of professionalism screws up a project and causes losses in the tens of millions–or hundreds of millions of dollars–will you take responsibility? Or will she?”

Melissa had no answer. Her well–maintained face flushed deep red. The look in her eyes shifted from awkwardness to disappointment.

“Riley, how did you become so cold and heartless?” Her voice trembled, like she’d been deeply wounded. “Just like your father. You two are exactly the same. So… so disappointing.”

She threw out those words and couldn’t stay a second longer, then turned to leave.

“Wait.” Just as Melissa’s hand touched the doorknob, Riley’s cool voice stopped her.

Melissa turned back, annoyed. “What now?”
