Her eyes carried an undisguised accusation. “Riley, that was so careless of you. Mom on medication–such an important thing, and you didn’t even think to ask? Even if you didn’t know, how could you just leave her alone and go off shopping by yourself? Don’t you know that with a severe allergic reaction, if you don’t get to the hospital in time, you can die?”
Every word hinted that Riley’s neglect had caused Melissa’s accident.
Riley listened to this twisting of the truth and almost found it funny.
She lifted her eyes and stared coldly at Elsie’s tear–streaked but aggressive face. “Even you–someone who’s lived with her for over twenty years–didn’t know about this allergy. And you’re blaming me, who just came back a few days ago? Elsie, don’t you think your logic is a little off?”
Zavier’s brow furrowed even deeper. He shot Elsie a displeased, warning look.
But Melissa reacted first.
Weakly, she raised her hand and tugged at Elsie’s sleeve, her tone conciliatory. “Elsie, don’t blame Riley… She just came back. She doesn’t know how things work in this family yet. It’s normal that she couldn’t take care of my little issues.”
Her words sounded like she was smoothing things over, but really, they poured fuel on the fire. Everything she said made Riley look even more uncaring.
Elsie’s expression turned even more pained. “So, Riley, you only have eyes for the Torres family now. All you think about is marrying into that rich family. You don’t care at all about the people in your own family anymore. Is that it?”
“Enough!” Zavier finally lost his patience and snapped.
But Melissa looked like Elsie’s words had hit a raw nerve. Her eyes reddened, and tears welled up. She turned to Riley, her voice choked but trying to sound strong. “It’s okay, Riley. Mom doesn’t blame you.”
Riley’s face showed clear anger.
This mother–daughter act–they are trying to paint me as cold, selfish, someone who chases rich men and doesn’t even care if her own mother lives or dies. In front of the Torres family, no less.
Just as she was about to fire back, Sebastian appeared at her side. He pulled her half a step behind him.
His deep eyes landed coldly on Elsie. His voice was low. “Ms. Elsie Harper, unless you have evidence, you might want to hold off on the accusations.”
Elsie’s heart jumped at his icy stare. She bit her lip instinctively.
She wasn’t about to back down that easily. Her mind raced, searching for more examples of how rude and arrogant Riley had been at home–anything to prove her point.
Then, Miranda, who had been standing by quietly watching, suddenly spoke up.
She looked at Melissa in the hospital bed. “Mrs. Harper, was the store you went to today Emas?”
Melissa blinked, then nodded weakly. She added, making sure to take credit, “Yes. Riley said she was coming to your home for dinner tonight, and I thought–the first time visiting, the gifts should be the best. So I took her there.”

Miranda asked again, “You’re a member there, I assume?”
“Of course,” Elsie cut in proudly. “My mom is a Diamond member.”
