Her crying stopped abruptly. The color drained from her face. But she couldn’t admit it, so she just argued back, “Why would I not want Riley to be happy? She’s my daughter, too. What happened today was an accident. How can you… How can you all blame me for this?”

Zavier’s body jolted slightly, as if Raymond’s question had just woken him up to something. It suddenly dawned on him.

He looked at Melissa, still lying in the hospital bed, making excuses. The usual indulgence in his eyes was gone. All that was left was deep exhaustion.

“The doctor said you’re fine. So use these next few days in the hospital to think about how you’ve been treating Riley.” His voice was calm but final. “There are things I don’t want to spell out. Think about your own behavior.”

Then he turned–didn’t look at Melissa again–and left the room with Raymond.

But even now, Melissa didn’t think she was the one in the wrong.

She wiped her tears away harshly with the back of her hand. What churned inside her wasn’t regret–it was resentment.

She blamed everything on Riley.

If she hadn’t come back, this family would still be happy. My husband and son would always be on my side.

But now, because of her, everything has changed.

Outside the hospital room, on the way to the elevator, Raymond couldn’t hold it in anymore. “Dad, why does Mom protect Elsie so much? Even now that Riley is back, she still isn’t close to her.”

Zavier’s tall frame stiffened for a moment. Then he just sighed.

He raised a hand and patted Raymond’s shoulder heavily. His voice was hoarse, hard to explain. “She probably… hasn’t adjusted yet. Let’s give her more time.”

That half–hearted answer didn’t satisfy Raymond at all.

He had so many questions, but he also knew pushing further wouldn’t get him`anywhere.

The two walked out of the hospital together and got into the car.

Raymond started the engine, ready to head back to the office with Zavier. But just as they pulled out of the parking lot, Zavier suddenly said, “Drop me off at the next intersection. I have something to take care of. You go back to the company.”

Raymond didn’t think much of it and pulled over.

But while waiting at a red light, he glanced over and saw that the car Zavier had gotten into was heading toward an office building downtown.

And in that building was the office of Harper Group’s legal counsel.

Raymond’s brow furrowed on its own. His confusion deepened.

He had a feeling–like Zavier was hiding something important from him and Riley.
