“Um, excuse me? Could I get your number?” One of the girls stepped forward, blushing, and held out her phone.
Sebastian didn’t even slow down. “Sorry. Married.”
Colin watched him shut her down like she was holding a live grenade and nearly doubled over laughing. When the girl’s hopeful eyes turned his way, he waved his hands quickly and tossed out an excuse. “We’re good, sweetheart. We’re just here to pick someone up. If we’re late, we’re sleeping on the couch tonight.”
He picked up his pace and caught up to Sebastian.
Inside Cyber Nest, the final match was raging on the big screen. Riley was up against a pro player with a solid reputation. They went at it for ten brutal minutes, neither giving an inch.
Then a sharp system chime rang out, and the screen exploded with color.
“Winner!”
Riley was in first place.
The staff member behind the counter slammed his hand on the desk. He handed over the limited-edition cartridge everyone had been drooling over and placed it in front of Riley with both hands.
“Yes! Riley, you’re insane!” Audrey let out a scream.
With the whole room cheering around her, she forgot every ounce of socialite dignity she’d ever had. The adrenaline went straight to her head, and she lunged at Riley, grabbed her face, and planted a big kiss right on her cheek.
Riley froze, stunned. Before she could shove the overexcited maniac off her, a voice dripping with amusement came from behind.
“Audrey, I knew you were into hot guys. Didn’t know you’d switched teams.”
Riley turned around, stiff, and sure enough, Colin was leaning against the doorframe with a huge grin. He even had the nerve to let out a wolf whistle.
And next to Colin, Sebastian stood perfectly still.
Half his face was hidden in shadow, making it impossible to read his expression.

But his eyes were fixed on Riley, heavy and unreadable.

In that moment, the limited-edition cartridge in Riley’s hand suddenly felt like it was burning her fingers.
After a long pause, Sebastian walked toward her, slow and deliberate. When he finally broke the silence, his voice was low and rough. “What brought you here?”
Audrey still found Sebastian a little intimidating. Watching his face turn stone-cold, she figured he was furious with Riley for leaving without a word. Afraid some of his anger might land on her, she quickly stepped in to smooth things over, her voice thick with exaggerated pride.
“Oh, come on, Sebastian. Don’t look so grim. It was my idea to bring Riley here. Haven’t you been chasing this first-edition cartridge forever? You pulled every string you could and still came up empty. Riley went head-to-head with those pro players and won it just for you!”
Sebastian’s eyes flickered. That hard, cold edge in his face softened, just barely, when he caught the words “won it just for you.”
He didn’t say anything. He just kept looking at Riley, something deep shifting behind his eyes. It looked like nostalgia. Or maybe something closer to the feeling of finding something he thought he’d lost, and holding himself back.
Colin caught the shift in the air right away. He shot a glance at Audrey, who was still completely clueless, and grabbed her by the sleeve with an annoyed look. “Okay, Ms. Brooks. The air in here is suffocating and my throat is bone-dry. Take me to get a coffee. The place with the longest line, right outside the campus gate.”
“Get it yourself. I haven’t even seen Riley get her prize yet!” Audrey whined, clearly not wanting to go.
“Prize? The biggest prize is standing right here.” Colin dragged her toward the door without giving her a choice. “Come on. Don’t be a third wheel.”
Audrey’s protesting voice faded down the hall, leaving just Riley and Sebastian alone in the
corner.
Riley took a deep breath, letting her heartbeat settle from the intensity of the match. She walked up to him and looked up at his ridiculous face, testing the waters. “What’s wrong? You don’t look happy.”
“I’m not unhappy.” Sebastian looked down and took her hand, his fingers brushing lightly over her knuckles.
