Emily pulled out a key and unlocked the familiar wooden door.

Everything inside was old but clean. Sunlight slanted through the window, and dust motes floated in the air, carrying that smell time gone by.

Two iron–framed beds were pushed against the wall, a wooden desk with its paint chipped off, and a tiny wardrobe. All of it matched the picture in Riley’s memory.

Her eyes fell on the lower bunk–her bunk. Two cardboard boxes sat on it, taped shut and waiting.

“Riley, you still don’t remember?” She set her box down and stepped closer, her voice soft. “That year, you got hurt in a car accident. The doctors said you hit your head and it caused partial memory loss. It’s been so many years. Is it still not back?”

Riley snapped out of it and met Emily’s worried eyes. She forced the corner of her mouth up and nodded.

“Yeah. It still hasn’t come back.” Her tone was flat, as if she were talking about someone else’s life. “But it doesn’t really changi anything. Life went on. School was fine. It’s just… the time before the accident feels like a movie with its middle reels missing can’t piece it together.”
