“What do you know?!” Melissa shot Raymond a glare, then turned sharply toward Riley. “I’m just trying to figure out why you’re so determined to go after this company Unless you’ve got something to hide–something someone caught you doing. Are you scrambling to cut them loose before it gets out?”
Riley’s face went cold. “What exactly are you implying?” she asked.
“Don’t play dumb with me!” Melissa looked like a woman pushed past her limit. “Don’t blame me for not sugarcoating this, but I am not going to stand by and watch you drag the entire Harper family down just because you can’t admit when you’ve messed up!”
Her hands shook as she unlocked her phone and flipped to a photo. She shoved the screen toward Riley. The shot was taken outside Seavoir Bistro, with Riley and Stephen walking side by side.
The photo was shot at a deliberately skewed angle and subtly blurred, warping the whole scene. It looked as though Stephen’s hand lay familiarly on Riley’s shoulder.
Melissa’s voice shook with theatrical distress. “Riley, I understand. You’ve only just returned to the company and are desperate to prove yourself to your father. But don’t ruin your reputation over a project. That’s where you draw the line. You may not care about your own name, but Sebastian and the Harpers both have reputations to uphold. How is this any different from women who sleep their way to the top?”
Riley gazed at the photo and almost let out a cold laugh. She had never thought things would go this far. Her own mother put on a show of moral indignation. She paraded the staged photo around, determined to take Riley down.
The words from the diary surfaced in her mind and bled across her thoughts.
Right. I should’ve known. A woman who could leave her own daughter at an orphanage door doesn’t have love for me. She has resentment. Hatred, maybe.
And if there’s no love, what low blow is off the table?
Riley stood up slowly and fixed Melissa with pure, cold contempt. “Even tabloids know a staged photo proves nothing without video. But you, as my mother, couldn’t wait to believe garbage like this and use it against your own daughter?
“Stephen’s company is unqualified, and he’s personally repulsive. I ended the partnership based on professional judgment and the company’s best interests. What exactly did I do wrong?”

Zavier kept quiet as the accusations stacked up. His long experience in business told him something was wrong.
His voice turned serious. “Riley, tell me the truth. Did Stephen do something to you? Something out of line?” he asked.
Before she could answer, Sebastian slammed his glass onto the table. He’d been watching the entire circus in cold silence from beside her, and now red wine bled across the white tablecloth.
His face had gone dark with barely contained fury.
“Enough.” His voice was low, but it carried the kind of weight that froze the air in the room.
Melissa flinched at the sound. A look of satisfaction crossed her face next.
She thought she’d won. She thought Sebastian had seen the photo and her carefully spun narrative and finally turned on his
