A flicker of panic shot through Melissa, sharper than anything she’d felt before. But her arrogance swallowed it almost as fast as i
came.
Zavier must be talking to Riley right now. That stubborn girl is probably refusing to back down. Refusing to apologize.
That child has been a curse since the day she was born. She has to fight me on everything. That’s why Zavier’s tied up. That’s the onl reason he hasn’t called.
“When he finally comes crawling back, I’m going to make sure he knows exactly what it costs to ignore me,” she muttered throug gritted teeth.
What she never imagined was that in the study at Harper Mansion, it wasn’t just Riley and Sebastian holding that file. Zavier had copy too.
The filthy truth she’d buried for over twenty years had been laid bare in a single night. The price was coming for her, and it was coming fast.
The truth was, Zavier had started suspecting a long time ago. He just couldn’t make himself believe it. Even if Riley wasn’t the chil of the man Melissa loved, she was still her biological daughter. How could she be that cruel?
But the proof was right there in front of him. She could. She really could.
All for a dead man, she drugged and abandoned her own daughter. After that, she plotted relentlessly to take in his child and take that vacant place.
Zavier closed his eyes as scenes from years past flitted through his/mind-Elsie growing up within the Harper household:
He’d never thought of himself as a petty man. Even knowing Else wasn’t his blood, he’d treated her well for Melissa’s sake. He’d never shortchanged her.
And Melissa watched Elsie enjoy everything that should’ve been Riley’s and felt nothing. No guilt. No shame.
She was probably proud of it. She’d taken a girl with no name, no claim to anything, and single-handedly turned her into the Harper family’s treasured daughter.
Zavier’s stomach turned. If he’d stuck to his old ways and compromised to keep the peace, to maintain the family’s superficial harmony, how much more would Riley have to endure?
The daughter he’d spent twenty years searching for wasn’t meant to be Elsie’s shadow.
The last bit of reluctance inside him finally crumbled under the weight of his disgust.
His phone buzzed. It was a message from Melissa.
“Zavier, this empty marriage has dragged on long enough. You and Raymond act as if Riley’s the only daughter who counts. You don’t care about Eisie or me at all. So let’s end this. Divorce. The girl raised? I’ll take full responsibility for her.”
He stated at the words, his face blank. He knew this move. It was her oldest weapon. Threaten a divorce to guake Him finch, force han to admit she was the one who mattered, bring him crawling back
This time, there was nothing left inside him that wanted to try.

He picked up his phone and dialed another number instead of replying.
“Hey, Gregory. Draft a divorce agreement for Melissa and me.”

Gregory Hudson had been Zavier’s lawyer and friend for years. He’d watched Melissa burn through every bit of goodwill Zavier ha ever given her.
In this world, most arranged marriages hollowed out into polite indifference by now. But Zavier had held onto her like she was th most precious thing in his life for nearly thirty years. And this was how it ended.
Gregory couldn’t stop himself. “Zavier! What finally got through to you? You’re actually done?”
Zavier rubbed his temple, exhausted. His voice was rough but steady. “She asked for it. So I’m giving it to her.”
