The thought slammed into Lucas so hard he nearly lost his grip on his expression.

For the rest of the meal, he was somewhere else entirely. Whatever Chase said, whatever toasts he made, Lucas responded on autopilot while his brain churned through the horrifying possibility taking shape.

Half an hour later, the miserable dinner finally ended. They stood and headed out of the private room, Chase still talking, Lucas barely hearing a word.

As they approached the elevator lobby, another group emerged from around the corner.

Sebastian’s parents led the way. Sebastian followed behind them, and at the very back walked Riley.

Chase spotted her right away. He’d seen her from a distance once before and knew who she was the second he laid eyes on her. He pointed at her and spoke in a quieter tone, There, Mr. Ashford. That’s her. The Harper family’s longlost daughter. She’s dining with the Torres family. Look at how friendly Mrs. Torres is with her. Think there’s a marriage alliance in the works?

Lucas followed Chase’s finger. The face he saw was identical to the Riley in his memory. His blood went cold. The color drained from his face before he could stop it.

He took an involuntary step forward, her name almost spilling out of his mouth. But before he could get the word past his lips, the elevator doors slid shut.

He made it back to the presidential suite and dropped all pretense of calm. He turned to his assistant, Trevor, and gave the order. Find out everything there is to know about the Harper family’s daughter. Whatever it takes. I want it now.

Trevor had never heard that tone from him before. He didn’t waste a second. He pulled every string available, and in record time, he sent back a recent photo of Riley, taken after her return to Nexopolis.

Lucas opened the file. The face staring back at him was sharp and cold and painfully familiar. Every feature matched the woman in his head. He knew those eyes, that mouth, the exact line of her jaw.

This can’t be possible,he muttered. He sank into the couch like his legs had given out.

He grabbed his phone and dialed Trevor again, his voice like ice. Book me a flight. Now.

He was going to see for himself. He was going to find out whether the woman over there was Riley, or whether someone had been playing him for a fool this entire time.

Riley knew nothing of any of this. She and Sebastian had gone home.

With him watching her, anticipation written all over his face, she took the velvet box into the dressing room and slipped into the gown.

The fit was flawless, like the garment had been sculpted to her body. It traced every curve without pulling or gaping. She stood in front of the mirror and almost didn’t recognize herself.

After a moment, she pushed the door open and walked out to where Sebastian was waiting in the living room. “Well? How does it look?she asked, a note of uncertainty in her voice.

He lifted his head. When he saw her, the smile in his eyes stilled. His Adam’s apple bobbed.

Under the lights, her skin glowed softly in the gown. Poised and elegant yet faintly alluringa charm unknown even to herself.

His voice came out rougher than he intended. You’re too far away. I can’t see it properly.

Riley didn’t think twice. She walked closer, closing the distance between them.

The moment she stopped, Sebastian reached out and wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her into him in one smooth motion. His breath was hot against her ear, and his eyes had gone dark.

He breathed her in, that cool, clean scent that was only hers. Then he murmured against her ear, It suits you. It suits you so well. I want to tear it off you right now.

Her heart kicked hard against her ribs. Heat flooded her face. She pressed a hand against his chest and pushed lightly. This was your parentsgift. You’d really tear it? What happens if I don’t show up in it? They might have opinions, she said.

He caught her hand against his chest and held it there, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. To be exact, it’s actually from me,” he said.

She looked up at him, confused.
