Few could deny that Zavier thought of everything when it came to protecting his family. No detail slipped past his careful
consideration.
“Feeling safer now?” Raymond slipped his phone back into his pocket and grinned. “No guests have arrived yet. Rest on the sofa and gather your energy. I’ll go check if Dad needs a hand with anything.”
Riley nodded gently. “Sure, go ahead.”
Silence settled over the spacious lounge the moment Raymond stepped out.
Walking toward the window–side sofa, Riley sank down slowly and closed her eyes. She regulated her steady breathing, pushing away the chaotic thoughts swirling through her mind.
A sudden knock on the door cut through her repose.
Assuming it was Raymond returning, Riley rose to her feet without a second thought and pulled the door open.
The figure standing outside was not her brother, though.
Dressed in an opulent purple tailored suit, Melissa stood in the hallway, holding an elegantly wrapped rectangular gift box in her hands.
The smile faded from Riley’s face in an instant.
She spoke in a flat, detached tone, “What are you doing here?”
A flash of resentment and wounded pride flickered deep in Melissa’s eyes, swiftly masked by a feigned tender smile.
Her voice sounded unnaturally soft, thick with insincerity.
“Riley, how can you speak to your mother like this? Don’t be so sharp with me all the time. Today’s your big day, the day you officially reveal your identity to everyone. I specially prepared a little gift for you, hoping to give it to you personally,” she chided gently.
Riley sneered inwardly.
A gift? Please.
More like a trap.
Still, she did not turn Melissa away.
Curiosity lingered in her mind; she was eager to see what new farce Melissa and Elsie planned to stage on such an important
occasion.
She stepped sideways and gestured for Melissa to enter.
Completely oblivious to Riley’s guarded hostility, Melissa glided into the lounge with graceful steps and set the gift box down on
the coffee table.
“Hurry and take a look. I knew you’d love it,” she chirped, deftly untying the silk ribbon and lifting the box lid open.

A garish peach pink hue flooded Riley’s sight the second the box opened.
Inside lay a gown styled identically to the one gifted by Sebastian’s parents.
But the difference between the two dresses was staggering, like night and day.

Its glaringly tacky shade, paired with gaudy floral patterns pieced together from cheap rhinestones and sequins, exuded a tacky, low–end vibe.
A cramped, awkward waistline ruined any sense of elegance. Stripped of the subtle, restrained charm of the luxury gown Sebastian’s parents gave her, this cheap imitation looked downright tawdry.
Unaware that Riley already had a perfect outfit prepared for her official debut, Melissa lifted the cheap dress with undisguised pride and smugness.
She boasted, “Riley, this is the top–tier custom piece from Elsie’s studio, entirely hand–stitched. A wealthy socialite overseas fell in love with it at first sight and offered a seven–figure sum, but Elsie refused to sell. She saved it specifically for your most important day as a gift.
“She never says much, but she’s always kept her big sister in her heart.”
Melissa walked over to Riley, holding the dress up against her figure and heaping on endless praise. “It fits you perfectly! I always knew this color flatters your skin tone and makes you look so vibrant. Do me a favor and change into it now, okay? Let every guest here see how extraordinary my daughter truly is.”
Riley found the hideous fabric utterly ridiculous.
