The lounge door clicked shut softly behind them.

A faint smile lingered on Sebastian’s lips. He turned to face Riley. “Now it’s just the two of us. What did you want to say?”
The lighthearted look on Riley’s face faded. She moved to sit beside him and lowered her voice, her expression turning serious. “Lucas is here, too. I’ve found out he’s working together with Melissa. I wondered why he’d gone quiet these past few days–he was just lying in wait for me today.”
A frown creased Sebastian’s forehead, yet no look of genuine surprise crossed his features.
Riley picked up on this at once and looked at him with a questioning gaze. “Did you already know about this?”
Sebastian did not deny it, his tone calm and steady. “Justin overheard them talking a few days ago. I suspect they plan to use today’s party to publicly reveal your past relationship with Lucas before our engagement can be announced.”
He paused for a moment, then reached out to brush a strand of hair from her face in a soothing gesture. “Don’t worry, I’ve already made plans to deal with them.”
Riley’s eyes widened in surprise. “What exactly are you going to do?”
A mysterious smile appeared on Sebastian’s face. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
His confident expression eased Riley’s anxious heart significantly.
She nodded, trusting his judgment completely.
Unable to stay in the lounge for too long, she spoke to Sebastian after standing up, “Call me right away if anything happens. I need to head back out to greet the guests.”
On an impulse, Riley leaned down and pressed a quick, soft kiss to his lips. With the playful grin of a cat that got the cream, she turned and walked out of the room.
The fleeting soft touch lingered on his lips. Sebastian brushed a finger across his mouth, wishing the moment could last longer.
Still, he understood the importance of today’s event and kept his impulses in check.
Barely ten minutes after Riley left, a knock sounded at the lounge door.
A maid stepped inside, carrying a tray with a steaming cup of mocha.
She kept her head bowed and spoke respectfully, “Mr. Torres, Ms. Harper asked me to bring this drink to you.”
Sebastian’s cold gaze swept over the cup on the tray, his tone distant and uninviting. “Set it down on the coffee table.”
The maid hesitated, refusing to put the cup down and taking a small step forward instead. “Sir, Ms. Harper made this mocha herself. Please take at least a sip, so I can let her know.”
A mocking glint flashed in Sebastian’s eyes.
Made herself?

Riley knew full well he never drank mocha.
This clumsy trick was far too obvious.

He picked up the cup with a blank expression, touched it lightly to his lips in a token gesture, then set it back down. “Will that suffice?”
Relief washed over the maid’s face, and she nodded eagerly, her voice lifting with joy. “Absolutely! Ms. Harper will be so happy to know you appreciate her thoughtfulness.”
“You may leave now,” Sebastian said with a dismissive wave of his hand.
The maid grabbed her empty tray and hurried out of the lounge, looking utterly relieved.
The second the door closed behind her, a triumphant smirk flashed across her previously timid face. She quickened her pace and vanished down the corridor.
Silence settled over the lounge once more.
Moments later, Sebastian’s upright frame swayed slightly.
A wave of dizziness crashed over him, and his vision blurred for a split second.
He pressed his fingertips hard against his temples, eyes falling shut as he leaned back against the sofa.
Outside the half–closed door, Elsie had been waiting for the drugs to take full effect.
She pushed the door open quietly and slipped inside.
Holding her breath, she twisted the lock to seal the room off completely. Her eyes lingered greedily on the man resting on the sofa.
