“Riley really has some nerve, keeping something this big under wraps the whole time!” Anthea rolled her eyes, her tone dripping with indignation. “If she’d told us she was a Harper heiress from the start, would we have treated her the way we did?”
Julian snorted in agreement, puffing up with self–importance. “All this drama is just her playing hard to get. Now that she’s got the Harper name, she’s putting on airs. Just wait; she’s making all this noise because she’s waiting for Lucas to come crawling back in remorse.”
“You know, maybe it’s better if he does win her back,” Anthea said, her arrogance unshaken. “Lucas is at a crucial point in his career. He needs a wife from a proper family to cement his standing. We didn’t know she was a Harper before, but now that we do, she’s barely passable for our son.”
She conveniently ignored the news of Riley’s high–profile marriage to Sebastian that had taken the city by storm.
In her inflated logic, every obstacle simply ceased to exist.
“All that talk about her getting married to the Torres family is just for show,” she said with a dismissive sneer. “It’s obviously a smokescreen; something designed to pressure us! They’re using the Torres name to force Lucas to beg for her forgiveness.”
Warming to her delusion, she turned to her husband with utter seriousness. “But once Lucas brings her back and we discuss the engagement, we can’t let our guard down. We need to ask exactly what the Harpers are offering as the wedding gift. If they try to cheap out, we won’t budge either; we’ll hold firm on the bride price.”
Julian nodded along, fully convinced. “That’s fair. We need to be smart about this.”
Just as they were deep in their fantasy of a grand marriage alliance, a sudden phone ring
shattered their reverie.
Anthea glanced at the caller ID, frowned slightly, and answered.
Unsurprisingly, it was Sophia on the other end; her voice frail and pitiful, spinning tales of hardship, each story circling back to one thing: money.
Ever since the truth came out, Lucas had strictly forbidden his mother from supporting Sophia financially, hoping to salvage whatever reputation he had left. But the sound of Sophia’s sobs softened something in her.
After all, she’d raised the girl like her own daughter for years.

Figuring Lucas was still in Nexopolis and wouldn’t know, she decided to visit Sophia in person. Worried that Sophia and Jeremy were struggling, she loaded her car with high–end nutritional supplements and luxury everyday items before heading out.
Julian happened to come downstairs and saw her packing. He merely commented, “Hurry up. Don’t let Lucas find out and cause another scene.”
He made no move to stop her.
Across town, in a cramped rental apartment, the walls seemed to close in.
Harvey had left early that morning to drive his cab, trying to keep them afloat.
Jeremy sat on a plastic stool, picking at a worn–out toy. The once–spoiled little boy had turned timid and nearly silent after the upheaval, staring blankly into space most days.
Sophia sat on the edge of the bed, hair disheveled, phone clutched in her hand.
The screen glowed with endless headlines. Riley, now a Harper heiress, married into one of the wealthiest families in Nexopolis.
Staring at the photos of Riley, surrounded by adoration and triumph, Sophia’s eyes burned with bitterness.
