“Damn it! Useless bunch of losers!” Simon cursed, hopping on one foot as he cradled his aching toes after kicking the stone.
One of his followers sidled up and whispered, “Simon, we can’t just take this lying down. There’s no way we can pay six million. But remember that Killian guy from last night? He seemed loaded, right?”
Simon shot him a glare. “Why bring him up? That blockhead just makes me angrier!”
“Think about it, Simon. You intercepted the wine, but if we can get Killian to have some, or at least get his hands on it, then we can pin the blame on him,” the follower said with a sly grin. “Killian’s got money, and he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. If we muddy the waters and make him take the fall, we’re off the hook.”
Simon paused, his restless energy settling into something cold and calculating. It was a dirty trick, but it might just work. Killian was straightforward.
“Not bad.” Simon wiped his face, a glint of desperation in his eyes.
Back in his room, he forced himself to calm down and dialed Killian.
The phone rang for a while before Killian answered. “Hello?”
“Killian, it’s Simon.” He made his voice as sincere as possible. “I’ve been thinking about last night. I was out of line. I want to apologize properly.”
There was a pause. “No need. I’m still at the hospital, just got back to the hotel.”
Simon’s heart tightened. He feigned concern. “The hospital? Are you okay? I feel terrible… I’m leaving soon, and we might not see each other again. Please, do me a favor. Drop by my room for a bit. Just a few words. Please?”
Killian was straightforward, as Simon had guessed. He didn’t like Simon, but his humble tone made Killian relent. “Fine. Which room?”
Half an hour later, Killian knocked on Simon’s door.
Simon welcomed him warmly, pulling him onto the sofa and pouring a large glass of wine. “No words needed, Killian. This glass is my apology.”
Killian frowned and pushed the glass away. “I can’t drink. Doctor’s orders.”

Simon’s hand froze mid-air, his smile faltering. “Just one sip, Killian. Refusing means you haven’t forgiven me. I’m about to leave, won’t you even grant me that?”
Killian wasn’t sharp, but he wasn’t stupid either. He caught the nervous flicker in Simon’s eye and the way he pushed the drink. Something felt off.
He studied Simon evenly. “Is something wrong?”
