Just then, a car swerved sharply to avoid another that had braked suddenly ahead. It spun out of control, lurching like a panicked animal, and veered straight toward where Melissa stood.

In that split second, Zavier’s mind went completely blank.

Even though he’d made up his mind to divorce this woman-tired of her endless complaints and theatrics-she was, after all, someone he had once loved deeply, the mother of his children.

He couldn’t just stand there and watch her get hurt right in front of him.

“Watch out!”

Without thinking, he shoved the car door open and lunged forward, using all his strength to push Melissa-still frozen in panic-onto the safety of the sidewalk.

But the momentum threw him off balance, leaving him directly in the path of the outofcontrol pickup.

Crash.

The impact was brutal. Zavier’s body was flung sideways, and blood immediately stained the asphalt.

Melissa, sobbing, tried to explain, glossing over the worst of what had happened.

Riley’s face had lost all its earlier panic. Now, as she stared at Melissa, her eyes held nothing but cold, unmistakable hatred.

“So,” she said, each word sharp as broken glass, “look what you’ve done. Are you happy now?”

Melissa flinched at her expression and took half a step back.

She wiped at eyes that were already dry, then slipped back into her familiar victim act, voice trembling as she defended herself. “Riley, how can you speak to your mother like that? I… I never meant to hurt your dad. He’s in surgery right now-do you think this isn’t killing me?

“Stop it!”

Riley cut off the performance sharply.

“You’re always like this!” Her voice rose, years of pentup emotion erupting at once. “Whether it

was leaving me at that foster home back then, or now putting Dad in there fighting for his life -you always run away. You always make it someone else’s fault! You never own up to what you’ve done, and you never believe you’ve done anything wrong!

“He wasted almost thirty years in a marriage because of you! After I went missing, he even helped raise your exboyfriend’s daughter! Tell me, who in this family ever treated you badly? Do you have to ruin everyone’s lives before you’re satisfied?”

Melissa fell silent. She bit her lip hard, wearing that familiar look of being misunderstood by her own family, and tears began pooling in her eyes again.

But Riley had no more patience left.

She turned to Raymond, who had been quiet beside her, and quickly steadied her voice. “Did you keep the news contained?”

Raymond nodded. “I spoke with the hospital and our media contacts. Nothing’s getting out for

now.”

“Good,” Riley said. “Sebastian, bring a few people over and secure the area. From this moment, no outsiders come through.”

She paused, her gaze like ice as it landed on Melissa. “And that includes her, of course.”

Melissa looked up, stunned. “Riley! How can you be so heartless? I’m your mother! Your father is still in there… and you won’t even let me wait here to hear how he’s doing? Are you trying to punish me? To make me pay for everything?”

“Then go ahead and pay! I’ve never seen you as my mother! Your feelings, your life-none of it

matters to me!”

Riley pointed straight at Melissa, each word clear and unyielding. “But you listen, and you listen good. If anything happens to my dad today, I won’t make it easy on you. I’ll call the police, hire the best lawyers, and make sure you spend the rest of your life behind bars- staring at four walls, regretting every single choice you ever made, day after day.”

Sebastian moved quietly in front of Riley, shielding her from Melissa’s devastated stare.

He looked at Melissa, his tone cool but firm. “Ms. Blackwood, have some dignity”

Melissa’s last hope was her own son.

She turned to Raymond, eyes brimming with tears, voice pleading. “Raymond, look at your sister… she’s throwing me out… I’m your mother, too! Are you really going to side with her and treat me like this?”
