“How is he?” Riley rushed over, her face pale and her voice shaking. “Did his condition decline? What happened after we left? Why was he rushed back into emergency?”
Faced with her barrage of questions, Sebastian’s expression turned complicated.
He reached out and held her shoulders, as if trying to steady her, and spoke in a low voice, “Try to stay calm. We’ll know more once the attending physician comes out.”
The fear of the unknown was its own kind of agony.
Riley’s eyes remained fixed on the closed doors; every second of waiting felt like torture.
Finally, the red light above the emergency room switched off.
The doors slid open, and a team of doctors and nurses in scrubs slowly wheeled the bed into the hallway.
Riley and Raymond forgot all decorum and moved forward to speak to the lead doctor-but then Riley unexpectedly met Zavier’s open eyes.
Though they still showed deep exhaustion, his gaze was clear and focused directly on her.
For a moment, everything seemed to stop.
Zavier was still on oxygen support and couldn’t speak, but as he looked at Riley and Raymond, the corners of his mouth lifted with clear effort into a faint, gentle smile.
A silent smile, as if to reassure his children, “Don’t be afraid. I’m still here.”
Riley stood frozen, her eyes burning with held-back tears. A wave of relief washed through her, leaving her almost weak in the knees.
Only after Zavier had been wheeled into his room did Riley snap back to herself. She quickly turned to the doctor who had followed out and asked, stumbling over her words, “My father… he’s…”
The doctor removed his mask, revealing a relieved expression. “Yes, Ms. Harper. Your father pulled through. He regained consciousness-it’s nothing short of remarkable.”
“Thank God! I knew the old man wouldn’t go down without a fight!” Raymond exclaimed behind her, his
voice thick with emotion.
The doctor went on with a smile, “What you said to him while he was unresponsive likely made a real difference. Mr. Harper’s will to live is remarkably strong now, and all his vitals are recovering steadily. Barring any complications, in another twelve hours or so, once he’s regained a bit of strength, we can remove some of the supportive equipment and he should be able to manage short sentences.”
Riley finally allowed herself to smile-her first genuine one in days.
She turned to Sebastian, who had remained quietly beside her, and said with a mix of gratitude and mild reproach, “Why couldn’t you have been clearer on the phone? You sounded so grave, you nearly scared my

brother and me to death.”
Sebastian looked somewhat apologetic. “Truthfully, at that moment I wasn’t sure whether those fluctuations were a good sign or not. Not long after you left, your father’s heart monitor suddenly showed a sharp spike–the readings were highly irregular.
“The situation was too uncertain for me to make any promises. I called the medical team immediately and they determined it was likely a critical breakthrough in consciousness. To be safe, they moved hir into a fully equipped emergency unit for intensive monitoring and support.”
Zavier remained under close observation in the ICU for the next several hours, and his condition Stabilized better than anyone had expected.
That evening, a nurse finally informed the family that the patient was stable enough for a brief visit,
Inside the room, the oxygen tubes had been removed from Zavier’s nose, though his face was still pale.
He looked at his two children, who stood by his bedside unable to hide their worry, and a flicker of guilt passed over his face. Gathering his strength, he managed a hoarse whisper from his dry throat, “I’m sorry… for worrying you… like this.”
That single sentence broke the composure Riley had held onto for so long.
Her voice caught, and tears of relief spilled over. “Dad… I knew it. I knew you’d come back to us.”
Raymond’s eyes were also red-rimmed. “You really gave us a scare this time, old man.”
Zavier offered a weak smile, soaking in the warmth of having his children near. His heart felt deeply comforted.
His marriage may have ended in failure, but he was grateful beyond words for these two caring, steadfast children.
That was more than enough.
But when his gaze moved past Riley and landed on Sebastian, standing tall and quiet behind her, the tenderness in his eyes cooled noticeably.
“You,” Zavier said, his voice still rough but deliberate, “changed your mind and decided to divorce my daughter?”
Sebastian was taken aback at first. A flicker of surprise crossed his normally composed face-and then, in an instant, he understood.
Riley had spoken those words at his bedside to provoke him into waking up… and he had heard and remembered every one.
Realization dawned on Riley as well, and she quickly stepped in. “Dad, that’s not what happened! Sebastian never treated me poorly-everything I said… I made it up to try and bring you back!
“He never got involved with anyone else during our trip, and he never once mentioned divorce. It was all
