Sophia bit down on her lower lip, her eyes growing watery, but she didn’t dare say another word.

Deep down, she knew her standing at Ashford Group was shaky. If anyone ever placed her and Riley side by side for comparison, she wouldn’t stand a chance.

Seeing her on the verge of tears, Lucas realized he’d been too harsh.

He let out a quiet sigh, softened his tone, and reached over to give her shoulder a reassuring

pat.

“Look, I know you’re upset about this,” he said, shifting back into his gentle demeanor. “But I’ve got a million things piling up on my desk right now–I’m completely buried. So do me a favor and don’t add to the chaos, alright?”

To smooth things over, he added, “Besides, that custom jewelry set I ordered for you—the designer says it’s almost ready.”

Sure enough, the moment she heard “jewelry“, Sophia’s mood lifted. Her eyes brightened again.

She was dying to ask about the design and the carat size, but held back, worried Lucas might see her as shallow or materialistic. Instead, she forced a gracious little nod. “Alright… the company comes first.”

Relieved she’d finally backed down, Lucas relaxed a bit.

Reluctantly, Sophia dug through her computer files, unearthed the buried folder, and forwarded Riley’s old proposal to Lucas.

Lucas opened the document. A quick skim was all it took for that familiar, polished style to register.

He made a few subtle adjustments to align with recent market shifts, then instructed Sophia to send it directly to Vincent.

After hitting send, Sophia stared at her phone, anxiously awaiting a reply.

It took a while. When the response finally came, it was brief and pointed. “What took so long?”

Those four words, though casually thrown, carried a tone of pure mockery. Sophia nearly hurled her phone across the room. She was seething, but had nowhere to direct her anger.

And while the crisis with Harper Group’s proposal had been temporarily resolved, all the other projects Sophia had let slide in the meantime had piled into a mountain of pending work.

Facing the stacks of documents needing her review and follow–up, she felt, for the first time, truly overwhelmed.

Lucas knew better than to expect too much from her at this point.

Watching Sophia clearly in over her head, he felt a wave of irritation himself. He sorted out a few project files she’d never manage, tucked them into a portfolio, and decided to take them to the hospital.

He figured at a critical time like this, Riley wouldn’t just ignore company business.

That afternoon, the hospital garden was bathed in warm sunlight.

Riley, in her hospital gown and accompanied by a nurse, was strolling slowly along the cobblestone path.

Lucas parked and spotted her slender figure right away.

He adjusted his suit and tie, picked up the portfolio, and walked over, aiming for an air of composed concern. “How are you holding up?” he asked, voice gentle. “Is the breeze too much?”

Riley turned at the sound of his voice. Her expression remained neutral, barely shifting. She gave a slight shake of her head.

Then her gaze drifted to the thick portfolio in his hand.

“Work must be crazy right now,” she remarked offhandedly. “Can’t even wrap up your own tasks without bringing them here?”

Her casual observation caught Lucas off guard. He’d rehearsed a whole speech in his head, but now the words stuck in his throat.

Avoiding her eyes, he looked somewhat embarrassed and turned to the nurse. “I’ve got it from here. Thank you.”

The nurse nodded and left.

Lucas smoothly took her place, walking slowly beside Riley through the garden.
