“Yeah,” Claudia said, with a touch of real admiration in her voice. “I’ll admit, I kinda figured that with your sister married to Sebastian–and Mr. Torres having that whole intimidating, keep–your–distance vibe–she’d come off like some delicate little flower next to him. But honestly? Sitting beside him, she held her own completely. Even matched his energy, you know? It makes me wonder… what she must’ve gone through before she was found, to have that kind of calm about her.”
When she brought up Riley’s past, Raymond’s smile faded a little. His expression grew quiet, harder to read.
“She’s been through… a lot,” he said finally. “Anyway, that’s why my dad and I both want her life to be smooth from here on out. No more bumps in the road.”
There was a protectiveness in his words, unspoken but clear–a tenderness he reserved for his
sister.
That heavier feeling settled into the car, shifting what had been an easy, lighthearted mood.
But for people like them, real peace was always in short supply.
Outside the window, city lights streaked past in blurred lines, reflecting against the glass and the two faces lost in their own thoughts.
The air between them had grown a little stiff, and the casual closeness they’d built through conversation seemed to pull back, separated by something invisible.
Before long, the car slowed to a stop outside Claudia’s apartment building.
Raymond glanced toward the brightly lit lobby entrance, reminded of the awkward run–in last time.
To avoid any unnecessary trouble, he left the engine running and made no move to get out.
Claudia stayed quiet too, undoing her seatbelt in silence and reaching for the door.
Just as her fingers touched the handle, Raymond’s calm voice came from beside her. “Claudia.”
She paused and turned to look at him.
In the dim cabin light, his gaze seemed softer than usual. “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself over… this arrangement between us. I’m not expecting anything out of it.”

What he didn’t say was that he hoped this would offer her some cover–not become another burden.
Claudia’s heart gave a funny little jump.
She held still for a second, then let a playful smile curl her lips, lightening the moment on purpose. “What, Mr. Harper… worried I’m gonna get cold feet and call off the engagement?”
Raymond took in her bright, teasing expression, and a faint amusement touched his eyes. He shrugged, neither confirming nor denying it.
That silent response somehow made Claudia feel better.
She let out a soft “hmph,” pushed the car door open, and stepped out.
The night air was cool. Claudia tugged her jacket closer and headed straight for the elevator lobby.
But just as she reached the entrance, a figure stepped out from behind one of the large concrete columns near the building–blocking her path.
“Claudia!”
It was Cyrus.
He looked like he’d been waiting a while. He was still in his work suit, but his tie was loose and crooked.
“Feeling pretty proud of yourself now, huh? Now that you’ve landed Mr. Harper?”
He came at her with accusations right away, his voice shaking slightly. “Was that the plan? Have him humiliate me to get your little revenge?”
Claudia was caught off guard by his aggressive tone. She took an instinctive step back, brows furrowing. “What are you talking about? Have you lost it? I don’t know what you mean.”
“You don’t know?” Cyrus‘ face twisted as he moved closer, teeth clenched. “Yesterday! I went to Harper Group to pitch a major partnership–and Raymond himself was the one who met with me. Right in front of me, he tore apart a proposal I’d been working on for over a month. Called it worthless. Dismissed the whole thing in like two sentences!
“When I got back, my boss was furious. He thinks I pissed off Raymond somehow and that’s why the deal fell through. Now he’s making me go back and apologize to him!”
