She lifted her face, her bright eyes blinking innocently.

Riley’s voice came soft and thick with hurt. “Lucas, I didn’t start any of this.

“I’ll never understand why, but Anthea’s been clearly upset ever since I got back.

“It’s like simply coming home was some huge, unforgivable mistake I’ve made.”

Lucas stared at her pale face and the exhaustion hidden in her eyes, and his heart sided with her in an instant.

She tilted her head toward Lucas and Anthea, her expression soft with helplessness. “The doctor warned me that this illness drained all my strength. My mood shifts these days easily, and I often can’t control my feelings–I hope you’ll all be patient with

me.”

It was a masterful ploy, retreating now to gain the upper hand later.

Sophia froze on the spot, glancing down at the bag in her hands, then back at Riley’s kind, forgiving expression.

If I accept it, I’m admitting I lost this fight completely, swallowing her condescending charity.

if I refuse, I’ll snub Lucas and look petty and unforgiving in front of everyone.
