“Lucas, don’t…” She sounded genuinely uncomfortable. “Did you forget what the doctor said? I’m still not fully recovered. For the next month or two, we can’t… be together.”

He let go, looking a little embarrassed.

“Of course, I remember!” He rushed to explain, like he’d been caught doing something shameful. “It’s just–I haven’t seen you in so long. I missed you.”

He tried so hard to cover up his frustration.

Riley turned to face him, her gaze soft. “Lucas, I know. You’re a normal man. Going without for so long… it must be hard.”

She stepped closer, reached out, and gently fixed his slightly messy collar. “Don’t worry. I’m not unreasonable. If you really can’t help it… and you find someone else outside… I wouldn’t blame you.”

Lucas stared at her in disbelief.

Riley… actually said she wouldn’t blame me?

“No!” Lucas denied it almost instantly. “I don’t need that!”

He grabbed her shoulders tightly with both hands. “Riley, what the hell are you saying?

“You think I can’t wait a little while for you? I’m your husband. Why would I go looking for another woman? Don’t test me like that. And don’t insult what we have!”

His voice was so heated, like he’d been truly wronged.

But Riley knew–she’d hit a nerve.

And that was exactly what she wanted.

She didn’t call him out. Instead, she played along,

Her voice trembled, like she was touched. “Lucas… you’re so good to me.”

Lucas loosened his grip on her shoulders and gently pulled her into his arms again. His tone turned soothing “Silly, if I’m not good to you, who should I be good to?”

He thought he’d smoothed things over, taken back control of the relationship.

So he steered the conversation toward his real goal.

“Riley,” he said, pulling back just enough to look down into her eyes, his gaze intense. “Since you know how I feel, would you come back and help me at the company?”

That was the real reason he’d brought her home today–why he’d been so patient with her.

At the word “company,” cold mockery flashed through Riley’s mind. But on her face, she showed just the right amount of sadness.

She said, “As long as Julian doesn’t mind, I do miss the company. I put so many years of work into it.

“But… Lucas, back then, you said Sophia needed to go there and learn. That she deserved a chance to prove herself. If I go back, what happens to Sophia? I can’t… embarrass her, can I?”

Lucas felt a wave of irritation at the question.

Why did I ever think bringing Sophia into the company was a good idea?

While Riley was gone, everything had fallen apart.

Sophia had the title of director, but she couldn’t even put together a basic project proposal without screwing it up.

Every project they gave her–either she pissed off the clients or blew the budget sky–high.

Just the other day, a longtime client came in to renew a contract worth tens of millions of dollars. Sophia acted all high and mighty, barely acknowledged them, and talked down to them like she was doing them a favor. She almost lost the whole deal.

Lucas had to step in himself just to keep things from falling apart.

In the week–plus she’d been there, she’d accomplished basically nothing–but she had made a mess.

He was seriously starting to wonder if following his parents‘ advice–letting her replace Riley–had been a terrible idea.
