Chapter 38 The Trial of False Tears

Several towering beastmen stood in front of her. Rosalie knew she couldn’t run. She shook off the hand gripping her arm and shot Reva a cold look.

“There’s no need to tie me up. I’ll walk on my own.”

“Oh well, I don’t mind as long as you know what’s good for you,” Reva said smugly.

Just thinking about what was about to happen filled her with joy.

Rosalie was surrounded on all sides; they kept her from escaping. Inside, she calculated quickly. Whether it was Elijah or Cameron, once either of them returned and found her gone, they would come looking for her. All she needed was to buy some time.

She also needed to leave a trail. Quietly, Rosalie pulled out a small blade and cut her forearm. Blood dripped onto the ground, one drop after another.

Beastmen had sharp senses. They could follow her by scent later.

As they walked, the road began to feel familiar. It was clearly the path back to her tribe. Rosalie didn’t know what Reva was planning, but her heart eased slightly. There were many people there; no matter what Reva wanted to do, she wouldn’t go too far.

Rosalie was pushed into a house. At a glance, she saw Carina seated at the center of the room. Standing beside her was Micah’s mother.

Everything became clear at once. Themis had taken a loss last time and couldn’t swallow it. Now she was back to stir up trouble again.

The moment Carina saw Rosalie, her brows shot up in anger. “You ungrateful child! I let you go, hoping you’d change, and this is how you behave? You’ve only grown more arrogant and gone so far as to bully your elders!”

Carina was furious. Not long ago, people had told her Rosalie had changed, that she was gentle and kind now. Who would have thought she was still this stubborn?

She had even considered letting Rosalie bring her husband back to live in the tribe. Before she could decide, someone had already come running to complain.

Rosalie let out a cold laugh. “I was already driven out. Is it necessary for the tribe leader to care about those who were cast out?”

Reva stepped forward; her voice was sweet, but her words were sharp. “Rosalie! How can you talk to Mother like that? You’ll break her heart!”

Carina stared at Rosalie in disbelief. Themis dabbed at her eyes and played the victim. “Please stop fighting each other. Everything is my fault.”

Crying mixed with comforting words and angry scolding. The room turned chaotic. Watching the farce, Rosalie raised her voice. “That’s enough!”

For some reason, every sound stopped. All eyes turned to her.

Rosalie lifted her chin and glanced at the fake, tearful Themis. Then, without warning, she dropped to her knees. When she looked up again, tears streamed down her face.

“Mother, this is all my fault,” she sobbed.

“I shouldn’t have refused Micah’s mother’s request.

“I should have broken up with Micah and let him marry that crippled woman at the edge of the village, just to suffer.

“All the blame is mine. I deserve to be torn apart from the one I love, to miss him day and night, so my pain can wash away my sins.”

She cried with heartbreaking sorrow. Yet inside, Rosalie sneered. So you want a pity show? Fine. I can play the part too.

Just then, a rush of wind swept in. Micah burst through the door, his face tight with panic.

He dropped to his knees beside Rosalie with a loud thud and pulled her into his arms. His handsome face was full of grief as he choked out, “Matriarch, this is my fault. I shouldn’t have gone against my mother just to protect you.

“It’s

my fault!” He clutched his chest and looked up, letting tears fall freely. “Just tore the two of us apart! Let the lovebirds go separate ways.”

Carina froze. Reva had only told her part of the story. She hadn’t known the truth behind it all.
