After fooling everyone else, Theresa lay on the top bunk, listening to the whispers below.
“How many more does Lab No. 5 need?”
“One.”
“Let’s take the one on the lower bunk, then.”
The men in white coats ended their discussion and casually lifted Ivan away, who happened to be lying closest to the door.
The group filed away and shut the door behind them.
Soon after, the sound of wheels echoed down the hallway, fading into the distance.
“Theresa…”
Vinny could be heard whispering from the neighboring bunk.
The little girl stretched out a hand and tugged her gently.
Theresa shook her head, signaling for her to stay quiet.
After all, there were cameras here.
Vinny understood and didn’t speak again.
She turned her head toward the wall, pretending to stay asleep.
Pulling the blanket over her head, Theresa took out a watch and checked the time—it was 10:08
p.m.
She lay awake until late into the night.
After dozing off briefly, she heard the door open again.
Wheels creaked as the same group of men returned. They set someone back down on the lower bunk, then left in a rush.
When the door closed, Theresa checked her watch again–it was 2:30 a.m.
They had taken Ivan for more than four hours before bringing him back.

She wondered what they’d done to him, along with the others who had been taken. Since it was the middle of the night, she couldn’t get up to check on Ivan.
Instead, she stayed alert until the morning.
At 6 a.m., the lights flickered on.
“Gosh, what’s wrong with me?”
Ivan, who’d been sleeping closest to the door, stirred awake.
“What’s wrong, Ivan?”
“My head hurts like hell!” He clutched his skull, groaning.
Someone nearby muttered, “Could it be from yesterday’s beating?”
“Come here,” Theresa said.
Everyone turned to look at her.
“Come here!” Theresa repeated. She had slapped Ivan the day before, and the memory of it still terrified him.
At her command, he obediently got up and shuffled over.
“Where does it hurt?” she asked.
“My head, of course!”
“Can you describe the pain?”
“That’s enough!” Hannah jumped up, glaring at her.
“You were the one who hit my brother yesterday! What’s with this act now?”
Just then, a voice boomed from the loudspeaker above. “What are you guys doing in there?”
The door swung open as several men in white coats marched in, their expressions grim. “Why aren’t you staying in your own beds?”
“It was her!” Hannah pointed at Theresa. “She told my brother to get out of bed!”
The men’s eyes swept over the two standing by the bed, then up to Theresa on the top
bunk.
“What are you trying to do?”

“He said his head was hurting. I was just asking what kind of pain it was,” she replied calmly.
The men frowned, but before they could speak, Hannah blurted out, “It was her! She hit my brother yesterday! She slapped him over and over–she’s the reason he’s hurt!”
Theresa lifted a brow.
Across the room, the men in white coats relaxed upon hearing Hannah’s explanation.
Their stern frowns eased, and they turned to her.
“No fighting here, got it? This is your only warning.”
“Understood,” Theresa replied.
“Wait, what? Why are you…” Hannah sputtered, furious that they hadn’t punished Theresa.
She was about to argue again but stopped when the men in white coats glared at her.
“No one shall leave their bed unless necessary. We don’t want any noise or trouble. Otherwise, you’ll be locked in solitary.”
The warning left everyone scrambling back under their blankets, and the door shut once more.
From the top bunk, Theresa looked down. “Does your head still hurt now?”
“No, it’s fine,” Ivan said.
“Tell me if it hurts again,” she replied.
“You’re just pretending to be nice,” Hannah muttered, turning her head away as she sulked.
Theresa ignored her, but not long after Ivan claimed he felt fine, his condition worsened that very afternoon.
“It hurts! It hurts so bad!”
He lay down as usual after lunch, but soon, he clutched his head and rolled over in agony.
Hearing his cries, she immediately sat up, her eyes fixated on the man writhing on the lower bunk.
