Chapter 549 An Escape Plan
The men in white coats lined everyone up.
:
After counting heads, one of them led the group forward.
No one dared to speak.
The corridor was silent, heavy with tension.
Theresa kept her eyes open while in line, quietly observing her surroundings.
On both sides of the long hallway, doors stretched one after another.
At the far end stood another door that appeared larger than the rest.
Beep. The leader swiped a card, and the heavy door unlocked instantly.
A blast of cold air filled the corridor.
“Wait for your numbers to be called,” the man ordered coldly.
“Number 7871, step inside!”
At once, a man raised his hand and walked toward the doorway.
Theresa’s mind raced.
All of a sudden, she raised her hand.
“Sir, my stomach hurts!”
The man frowned at her.

“It really hurts, and it’s killing me. If you won’t let me out, I’ll just have to do it here. You can all turn around, hold your breath, and I promise I won’t waste anyone’s time.”
The man’s expression darkened.
“Take her inside. Hurry!”
With another beep, he opened a side door.
A lower–ranked attendant ushered her out of the corridor.
Theresa quickly leaned toward Vinny, whispering a few words before following the attendant.

Beyond the door was a small toilet, with a sink outside the stall and another door leading somewhere unknown.
Theresa’s eyes flickered. Was this place just a maze of interconnected rooms and doors?
“Hurry up!” the man behind her snapped.
Theresa turned and said, “I’m actually on my period. Do you have any pads here?”
His expression remained the same. “No. Get on with it.”
She realized she wouldn’t get any answers from him.
With that, she stepped into the bathroom.
It was the only space without surveillance, but the ceiling was solid.
There was no way out.
Just then, Theresa’s eyes fell on the toilet before her–and the electrical socket beside it.
An idea sparked instantly.
“Help!” A few moments later, she cried.
The man in the white coat waiting outside rushed in at once.
But the moment he stepped into the bathroom, he stepped into the puddle of water.
A surge of electricity shot through, and the man collapsed with a sharp jolt before he even reached the stall.
Theresa cut off the stream of running water and unplugged the socket.
The puddle that had reached his ankles quickly receded.
She stepped down from the toilet, landing lightly on the now–safe floor, and bent to pick up. keycard hanging from his chest, labeled C897.
She scanned the bathroom with her psychic sense, then plastered on a look of panic as if desperately seeking help.
She rushed toward the other door and unlocked it with the keycard.
Beyond was a new corridor.

On both sides, observation rooms stretched in rows like hospital wards.

Inside each room, a person was strapped to a bed, their limbs restrained and bodies pierced by countless tubes.
Some tubes pumped liquid in, others drew it out.
Every person’s face twisted in agony.
Theresa caught sight of a familiar face–Ivan’s.
Taken away just that morning, he no longer looked like a zombie.
His gray, lifeless eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, while dark veins stood out against his pale skin.
He was hooked to a machine resembling dialysis.
Thick black liquid drained out of him, only to be filtered and replaced with a milky white solution fed back into his body.
He no longer resembled a zombie–instead, he looked like a corpse.
Just then, several voices came from the corridor.
“Did all of yesterday’s tests fail?”
“Yes, all ten subjects were a failure.”
“Finding a compatible host is nearly impossible. We’ve lowered the toxicity as much as we can, but none of them are able to withstand it.”
“Keep quiet. They’re running screenings outside right now to select the strongest hosts. We’d better find another way to cut the toxicity. The S–rank has issued strict orders–we must find someone who can withstand the original virus and produce antibodies.”
The voices were getting closer, and Theresa sensed the group would emerge from the next room at any moment.
Quickly scanning her surroundings, she swiped the card against Ivan’s door.
At once, an alarm blared:
