Chapter 571 I Want to Join Your Team
The portion of a single can of meat was laughably small–not even enough for two bites each.
Four women huddled around it, barely making do. Then the woman who had barely managed to get into the room said quietly, “You guys can eat. I’m not hungry.”
She looked utterly drained, as if she’d been caught in the storm outside. Water drenched her from head to toe, her hair plastered to her scalp, dirty droplets trickling down in messy
streams.
She shivered, hugging herself tightly in the corner against the wall.
Truthfully, none of the others were in any better shape–they all looked miserable–so nobody paid her much attention.
But the real shocker was her refusal of the meager canned food.
That alone made everyone excited.
She shrank back, and the remaining three wasted no time dividing her share among themselves.
It was survival of the fittest–nothing was given for free. Anything left unclaimed would be snatched up in an instant.
No one cared about the girl who turned down the food. They simply returned to their corners, picking at their paltry portions.
Hannah received an extra bite of meat. She bit into the slightly spoiled canned chunk–it crumbled into powder on her tongue, more artificial seasoning than actual flavor.
Yet, compared to nothing, it was a feast.
She ate deliberately, scraping every last bit from the can. That was when a tantalizing aroma reached her from next door.
Steven and his group were devouring instant noodles, piled high with crab sticks, various meatballs, and even shark fin. Every item in that pot looked irresistible–utterly impossible to ignore.
A huge pot of noodles still remained after they’d eaten their fill. The fragrant steam called to her.
“Let me have some too!”

Hannah bolted over, heart racing.
As she approached, Theresa brandished a knife.

Hannah froze, eyes wide, and tried her most pitiful expression. “I want to join you guys!”
Theresa raised an eyebrow.
“You invited me before, remember? I’m in now!” Hannah stepped closer, pride swelling despite her fear, trying to wedge herself into their circle.
Just as she was about to sit, the knife clanged against her backside, stopping her cold.
Hannah straightened, locking eyes with Theresa.
“When did I ever say you could join?”
Theresa’s gaze was icy, dismissive.
“I-I’m Hannah Bowen!” she stammered.
Theresa didn’t budge. “And who exactly is Hannah Bowen?”
Hannah’s face fell. She glanced at the others. “Brandon! Tyler! Say something! We were in the same dorm–remember? You used to suck up to me, promised to have my back!”
The two boys stared at Hannah as if she were some kind of freak.
They had once felt a little sympathy for her–her brother had died, and on top of that, she was a mental manipulation ability user, so they thought it might be useful to get close.
But they hadn’t gained a single benefit from her, so she had no right to make demands.
At most, they just knew her, and expecting more was completely unreasonable.
Now they regretted ever giving her attention while ignoring Theresa.
They realized how foolish they had been.
“Say something!” Hannah shouted.
“Look, Hannah,” Brandon said, “we did invite you to join Theresa. You refused.”
“Yeah, we asked multiple times. If you regret it now, that’s on you. We did everything we could,” Tyler added.
Hannah’s face flushed crimson, then drained pale.

If only she had known that siding with Theresa meant safety and hot meals, she never would have gone with Patrick–who had taken advantage of her, to boot.
There was nothing she could do now; bowing down and begging was out of the question.
“You people are heartless, shameless, unreliable! Especially you, Theresa!” Hannah seethed. “Don’t forget–you killed my brother! I’m being magnanimous by joining you and forgiving you! What more do you want?”
Theresa listened, then rose from her seat.
Her life seemed full of idiots who kept bumping into her, each one stranger than the last. Each one worthy of a slap.
Smack!
Theresa’s hand struck Hannah with such force that she nearly spun around.
“What are you doing?” Hannah asked.
“Smacking you, of course!” Theresa replied. “Are you brain–dead? I’ve seen people do some ridiculous things, but never something this dumb. If you’re that clueless, take a minute to think. Otherwise, don’t even speak.”
