From Outsider to Family
HANNAH’S POV:
“I was starting to worry you wouldn’t make it,” she said as she reached us.
But she didn’t come to me or Elijah first. She went straight to Amelia.
“Oh my goodness, sweetheart!” Mrs. Martinez bent down and gently lifted Amelia into her arms, being careful not to crush her dress. “Look at you! You look like a real princess!”
“Thank you, Grandma,” Amelia said, and I could hear the shy happiness in her voice.
I watched as Mrs. Martinez actually froze for a moment, her eyes getting slightly misty. Then she pressed a kiss to Amelia’s forehead and hugged her even tighter.
“My beautiful granddaughter,” she whispered.
When she finally set Amelia down, she turned to Andrew. “And you, my little gentleman.” She patted his cheek affectionately and straightened his bow tie even though it didn’t need straightening. “So handsome. So grown up.”
Andrew grinned, clearly proud. “Thank you, Grandma. I styled myself today.”
“Did you?” Mrs. Martinez looked genuinely impressed. “Well, you did an excellent job.”
Mr. Martinez appeared from somewhere behind his wife, his expression warm as he approached Andrew. “Look at this young man!” He extended his hand for a handshake, which Andrew took very seriously. “You’re definitely my grandson. I can tell just by looking at you.”
“Really?” Andrew asked, his eyes lighting up.
“Absolutely. You have the Martinez determination in your eyes.’
Andrew adjusted his jacket proudly, making all of us laugh.
And then, finally, Mrs. Martinez turned to me. I braced myself out of habit, waiting for the judgment, the barely concealed disappointment, the coldness I’d grown so accustomed to.
But instead, she smiled. A real, warm, genuine smile that reached her eyes.
“Hannah,” she said, taking both of my hands in hers. “You look absolutely beautiful. Truly.”
I blinked, momentarily speechless. “Thank you,” I managed to say, returning her squeeze gently.
She leaned in closer, lowering her voice so only I could hear. “I’m so glad you’re here tonight. With all of us.”
There was something in her tone, something sincere and almost apologetic, that sent an unexpected wave of emotion through me. My throat tightened.
“Thank you for inviting us,” I said quietly.
She gave my hands one more squeeze before letting go, her eyes holding mine for a moment longer. It felt like something had shifted between us. Something fundamental. Like maybe, finally, she was seeing me as a person. As her son’s partner. As the mother of her grandchildren.
As a family.
Elijah caught my eye, raising his eyebrows slightly as if to ask if I was okay. I gave him a small nod and a slight smile
“Come,” Mrs. Martinez said, gesturing for all of us to follow her. “Let me show you to your table. We have you seated near the front.”
She led us through the ballroom, past tables full of people in expensive suits and designer dresses. I recognized a few faces from business magazines and news articles. CEOs, politicians, socialites. The sort of people who shaped the city, who made decisions that affected thousands of lives.
