HANNAH’S POV: 

“It is,” I confirmed, feeling genuinely touched. “I’m so glad you like it.” 

“Like it? I’m obsessed. You’re one of my favorite designers.” 

That still felt surreal to hear. My little side project of designing clothes had somehow turned into a légitimate business. What had started as me making outfits for myself and the kids had evolved into a small boutique collection that was gaining attention. 

“That means so much coming from you,” I said honestly. 

The governor’s wife beamed. “Oh, we simply must have lunch soon. I want to talk to you about possibly designing something for the spring gala.” 

“I would love that.” 

As they settled into nearby seats, I caught the governor’s daughter looking at Elijah. It wasn’t flirtatious exactly, but there was something assessing in her gaze. Curious. Measuring. 

I felt a tiny flicker of that old insecurity, that fear that I wasn’t enough, that someone prettier or more sophisticated would catch his attention. 

But then Elijah’s hand found mine under the table, his fingers lacing through mine, and he gave me a gentle squeeze. Like he knew exactly what I was thinking and wanted to remind me that I had nothing to worry about. 

I squeezed back and forced myself to smile and turn my attention back to the governor’s wife, who was now asking me about fabric choices and design inspiration. 

The dinner continued. Course after course of beautifully plated food that tasted even better than it looked. Drinks flowed freely, champagne and wine and cocktails I couldn’t name. Speeches were made by various business leaders and politicians, talking about economic growth and community development and other topics that I tried my best to pay attention to.
