Ten Minutes Late
ELIJAH’S POV:
Someone had hurt her. I’d seen the hair. The way her phone was thrown. The open car door.
She’d fought. I knew she had. Hannah wouldn’t go quietly.
The thought made my chest feel like it was caving in.
Police sirens had started approaching from every direction within minutes. Red and blue lights had flooded the parking lot, painting the concrete walls in violent, flashing colors. Officers had immediately cordoned off the entire floor with yellow tape. Forensics had pulled on gloves and started examining everything.
And the questions had started.
“Can you confirm this is your wife’s vehicle?”
“Yes, that’s her car.”
“And this phone belongs to her?”
“Yes. That’s Hannah’s phone.”
“Did she mention being threatened recently? Any strange calls or messages?”
“No. Nothing recent.” I’d paused. “But she was attacked before. A few months ago.
“Do you know who was responsible for that attack?”
And that’s when Janet’s face had flashed through my mind. Her mischievous eyes. That cunning smile. The way she’d always looked at Hannah with barely concealed hatred.
From behind me, I’d heard hurried footsteps. Multiple people running into the parking lot.
“Elijah!” My mother’s voice had rung out, frantic and high-pitched. “Where is Hannah? What is going on? Why won’t she pick up her calls? Why didn’t you answer when I called?”
I’d turned to see my mother rushing toward me, my father close behind her trying to keep up. Lucas and Martin were right there too, both looking confused and worried.
“What is happening here?” Lucas had asked, his eyes scanning the police cars and forensic team. “Where is Hannah? Why are there police everywhere?”
I’d opened my mouth to speak, but nothing had come out. I could only stare at the ground, at that shattered phone being carefully photographed and bagged as evidence.
Lucas had followed my gaze. “Is that… is that Hannah’s phone?” he’d whispered, his facial expression instantly changing from confusion to horror.
My mother had seen it too. Her knees had buckled instantly, and my father had caught her just in time, wrapping his arms around her waist to keep her from falling.
“Oh God,” she’d breathed, one hand flying to her chest. “No… no, not her. Please, not Hannah. What happened? Elijah, what happened?”
“She’s gone,” I’d finally managed to say, the words feeling like broken glass in my throat. “Someone took her.”
The words had shattered whatever fragile calm had still been holding the moment together.
