Pulled From the Flames
Pulled From the Flames
3RD POV:
THAT SAME EVENING:
While Elijah was debating on whether to cross over the piece of ceiling that was now obstructing his way from going into where Hannah was, knowing the house was burning so fast. Outside, the fire department had arrived as well as Mr Waltson, Lucas, Jacob and Martin.
As soon as they’d found out what Elijah was planning to do, Martin had immediately called his godfather in a panic. Mr. Willow had told them about the two leads they were following, and all three men had sprung into action without a second thought, racing to the location to try to stop Elijah from doing something stupid.
But they were too late. He was already inside.
The fire trucks were positioning themselves, firefighters jumping out and immediately starting to unroll hoses. The chief was barking orders, trying to assess the situation and figure out the safest approach.
“Two people confirmed inside!” one of his men shouted. “Male went in approximately three minutes ago. Female status unknown but presumed trapped!”
“Get water on that east wall NOW!” the chief commanded. “And somebody get me a thermal camera. I need to know where they are!”
They were honking horns, shouting through megaphones, calling out for Elijah to get out of the building immediately. But he couldn’t hear them. Or if he could, he was too focused on finding Hannah to care about his own safety.
The fear of losing Hannah, of her being trapped somewhere in that inferno, consumed him completely. It drowned out everything else. Every survival instinct, every rational thought and every voice telling him to wait for professionals.
The fire department sprang into even more urgent action when they learned that two people were definitely inside and that the fire was spreading at an alarming rate. The structure was old and it could collapse at any moment.
“Elijah, get out of there! The fire department is here! They have equipment! Let them handle it!” Martin yelled angrily toward the building, though he knew his voice probably wasn’t carrying through the roar of the flames.
The fear of losing his best friend, his brother in everything was crossing his mind in vivid, horrible detail. He could see it happening. The building collapsing. Elijah being crushed or burned alive.
“HANNAH! HANNAH!” Lucas had walked as close to the burning building as the heat would allow, right up to where the firefighters were setting up their perimeter. He screamed her name over and over, tears already brimming in his eyes and threatening to spill over.
