Until She Opened Her Eyes

Something in his desperate expression softened her. “Hold on,” she murmured gently, stepping away briefly.

She returned a moment later pushing a wheelchair. “I’ll take you to her. But you have to promise me you’ll only stay a few minutes. You need rest too.”

“Thank you,” Elijah breathed, sinking gratefully into the wheelchair. “Thank you so much.”

The hallway lights felt too bright as they moved through the silent hospital. Everything was quiet at this hour except for the occasional beep of machines behind closed doors and the soft footsteps of nurses on night duty.

There was a faint smell of disinfectant that seemed to linger everywhere in hospitals, no matter how much they tried to mask it with other scents.

Elijah’s heart was pounding harder with every turn they took and every door they passed.

When they finally reached the ICU, the nurse used her key card to unlock the door. She gently pushed it open and then stepped back to give him privacy.

“I’ll be right outside if you need anything,” she said softly.

Elijah wheeled himself slowly into the room. His breath caught in his throat at the sight of her.

Hannah lay completely still in the hospital bed. She was covered with a thin white blanket up to her chest. Bandages wrapped around her left shoulder where the burns were. Her hair had been brushed back neatly by the staff, probably combed by one of the kind nurses on shift.

But the most beautiful thing, the most important thing, was the soft, steady rise and fall of her chest. She was breathing. On her own without the help from the machines.

Elijah wheeled closer, stopping right beside her bed. He reached out with a trembling hand and brushed his fingers lightly over the back of her hand.

“Hey, my love,” he whispered, his voice breaking as he tried desperately not to cry. “It’s me. I’m right here.”

He carefully wrapped his fingers around hers, holding her hand gently.
