The First Name I Spoke

HANNAH’S POV:

I inhaled sharply at the memory, and suddenly my chest tightened painfully. My breathing got faster and more shallow.

“Hannah?” Maya whispered from across the room, taking a tentative step forward. “Babygirl, it’s okay. You’re safe now. We’re all here with you.”

But it wasn’t okay. Because the next memory hit harder, clearer, more vivid.

Janet’s face. Close to mine. That mischievous, cruel smile I knew so well.

Her hand holding a lighter. Flicking it on and off. On and off.

Her laughter echoing off concrete walls as she walked away, as she closed and locked the door with a key.

The sound of flames beginning to crackle and grow, crawling toward me like living things.

I flinched violently, my whole body trembling so hard that the heart monitor beside my bed started beeping in alarm. The sound was shrill and urgent.

“Oh God,” Lucas whispered from his spot by the window, his voice breaking completely. “She remembers. She’s remembering what happened.”

The older doctor took a careful step closer to my bed, his movements slow and non-threatening. “Hannah,” he said calmly, “you were rescued from a fire. You were unconscious when the emergency response team arrived at the hospital. Based on the evidence at the scene, it appears you managed to free yourself from restraints and had taken shelter in a small ventilation cavity in the structure. That ventilation, that air pocket, is likely what saved your life.”

My lips parted, but again, no voice would come out. Just a painful rasp.

“You inhaled a significant amount of heavy smoke,” the younger doctor added very carefully, watching my face for signs of distress. “Your throat and lungs were severely irritated and inflamed from the exposure, which is why speaking is so painful and difficult for you right now. But I want you to know that the treatment is working. You’re improving every day.”
