Rage in Chains
HANNAH’S POV:
“It’s done,” Cherry whispered through her tears, her voice thick with emotion. “It’s finally done. They can’t hurt you anymore.”
I cried then. Not the quiet, controlled, therapist-approved tears I’d been practicing. But real, messy, shoulder shaking sobs that blurred the entire world around me.
For the first time in so, so long, I felt genuinely free, veey free.
But the beautiful moment shattered like glass thrown violently against stone.
“NO!”
Janet’s scream ripped through the courtroom like a blade cutting through fabric.
I turned just in time to see her lunging forward from her seat, yanking against the officers who immediately grabbed her arms. From where I stood, she looked absolutely unhinged. Wild and very insane.
“LET ME GO!” she shrieked at the top of her lungs, her voice going shrill and breaking. “LET GO OF ME RIGHT NOW!”
Her face had turned bright red, completely contorted into something almost monstrous. Veins bulged visibly at her temples. She twisted violently, her hair whipping around like she was possessed.
“HANNAH!” she screamed directly at me, spittle flying from her mouth. “YOU’RE HAPPY, AREN’T YOU? YOU’RE SO HAPPY! BUT THIS ISN’T OVER! DO YOU HEAR ME? I SHOULD HAVE FINISHED WHAT I STARTED! I SHOULD HAVE MADE SURE YOU BURNED!”
The entire courtroom froze in shock.
She managed to jerk one arm free for half a second, her hate-filled eyes locked directly on me with such pure malice it was almost physical.
She actually bolted forward, taking two steps in my direction before the officers tackled her.
I felt such intense secondhand embarrassment watching her lose control so completely in front of everyone.
