HANNAH'S POV:
They all left one after another. Martin had a plane to catch for a work trip, something he had tried to cancel but I insisted he go. Business didn't stop for tragedy. Jacob and Cherry had a medical appointment or was it antenatal class, it was either one. I couldn't remember. My brain felt like static.
Lucas had to go for a meeting with a client and I think aside from me, he was one of the other person who felt the anger and pain I felt. Before he left, he pulled me into a tight hug, it was the hug that tried to hold all the broken pieces together.
"I will keep in touch. Please take your mind off this, I got it under control. Love you," Lucas said and kissed the side of my head.
"Love you too. Thank you." I hugged him and he dashed out until it was just Elijah and I standing in the room.
The silence between us was heavy. He didn't try to fill it with empty reassurances or pointless optimism. He just stood there, present, waiting for me to fall apart or hold it together, ready for either.
"Come on." Elijah placed his hand softly on my waist and I melted at his touch as he led me out.
We got seated in the back of Maybach Truck and I was just trying to distract myself with the thought and got excited to see my babies. I hadn't seen them in a week, and just hugging them would definitely bring some type of peace.
The drive back to the mansion felt longer than it should have. Elijah didn't turn on music. He didn't make small talk. He just held my hand, his thumb tracing circles on my palm, a quiet reminder that I wasn't alone.
I stared out the window, watching the city blur past. People were going about their lives. Laughing, working and existing. Meanwhile, mine had just burned to the ground.
When we pulled up to the house, I saw Amelia and Andrew waiting by the door. The moment Amelia spotted me through the window, her face lit up like sunshine breaking through clouds.
"Mommy!" she shrieked, bouncing on her toes.
I forced a smile. For her. For them. Always for them.
The second I stepped out of the car, both kids launched themselves at me. Andrew got there first, wrapping his arms around my waist, and Amelia crashed into us a second later, nearly knocking us all over.
"We missed you!" Andrew said, his voice muffled against my stomach.
"I missed you more," I whispered, kissing the top of his head. Then Amelia's. Then Andrew's again because he got jealous.
Elijah ruffled Andrew's hair. "You two been good?"
"Yes!" they said in unison, which probably meant no, but I didn't care.
"Come on, let's go inside," I said, taking their hands. "Tell me everything I missed."
And they did. For the next hour, I sat on the couch with Amelia curled into one side and Andrew sprawled across my lap, and they talked. About school. About a new game Andrew learned. About how Amelia's friend Emma said her dress was the prettiest in class and Amelia told her that her mommy made even prettier ones.
I listened to every word. I asked questions. I smiled. I laughed softly when Amelia told me she wanted to design dresses like me one day, "but prettier," she added seriously, and Andrew immediately argued that my dresses were already the prettiest in the world.
"I think Mommy's dresses are the best in the whole universe," Andrew declared with the confidence only a seven-year-old could muster.
