Kate and Moses had another one of their eye conversations and both nodded at exactly the same time which was still a little bit unsettling to watch but I was genuinely grateful for it. Even Sandra, after a moment where she looked at the ceiling and exhaled through her nose very loudly like she was releasing something she had been holding, said, Fine. But I am going to need the supplier contacts immediately and someone better have a proper workspace organized because I am not cutting fabric on a folding table, Hannah. I genuinely refuse.” 

“I hear you, Sandra,” I said, and I fully meant that. 

I had known from the start of the meeting that Cora had not said anything at all.

She twisted her fingers and looked at a point somewhere past my shoulder and said, “I cannot do this again.” Her voice was very steady which somehow made it worse to hear. “I am so sorry. I truly am. But I walked through that building after the fire and I looked at everything and I just… I cannot. Not right now. I need time and I do not have time if we are doing this in thirty days.” 

I stood there and let those words settle on me. They did not hit like a slap. More like a slow heavy weight coming to rest on my chest. 

“I understand,” I said.
