ELIJAH’S POV.

I have never in my life considered myself to be a patient man.

I have tried to be. I have worked on it. Hannah would tell you that I have gotten significantly better and she would. be right, which honestly still surprises me sometimes. But patience as a natural personality trait has never been something I could honestly claim. When I want to know something, I want to know it now. When there is a problem, I want it handled. When someone comes at what is mine, the part of me that was raised in a boardroom and sharpened by years of watching my father move through the world like a chess player starts calculating before I have even consciously decided to start calculating.

So when Lucas sent through the partial plate number the morning after he first showed us the CCTV image, I was on the phone within ten minutes.

Hannah had already left for the warehouse. She had kissed me on the cheek at six forty-five in the morning before I was fully awake and said something about the lighting in the back section needing to be adjusted and was out the door before I could form a complete sentence in response. The twins were still asleep. The house was quiet. I sat at the kitchen island with my coffee and Lucas’s message on my screen and I made the first call.

My contact in law enforcement was a man named Bates, and I want to be very clear that our relationship was entirely legal and above board and based purely on the fact that we had done each other professional favours over the years in ways that benefited both of us and hurt no one. He was not the kind of contact you used for anything shady. He was the type of contact you used when you needed information moved quickly through the right channels without it getting buried under three months of paperwork. There is a difference and I want that on record.

“I need a plate run,” I told him when he picked up.
