The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 209

ELIJAH’S POV:

I called Lucas.

He answered on the second ring which told me he had been waiting to hear from me. “Did Kojo find something?” he asked, skipping hello entirely, which was becoming a pattern among the people in my life and I was starting to wonder if I had set a bad example.

“The car was picked up at the airport fifty minutes after a flight arrived from Frerus,” I said.

Silence. Then a long exhale. “Oh.”

“Yes.”

“You have not told her.”

“No. Not yet.”

Another pause. I could hear Lucas thinking and I braced myself slightly because Lucas had opinions about most things and was not shy about sharing them.

“I think you are right not to tell her yet,” he said finally, which was not what I expected. “She is in the middle of something important and she needs to be in it completely. But Elijah, we cannot keep this from her for long. She will find out and if she finds out that both of us knew and said nothing, we are both going to have a very bad time.”

“Agreed. I need two or three days maximum to see if Kojo can pull anything more specific before we bring her in.”

“Two or three days,” Lucas repeated like he was testing the weight of it. “Fine. But I mean it about the bad time. The woman threw a folder at me once for hiding something significantly smaller than this.”

“She threw a folder at you?”

“It was a light folder,” he said quickly. “Barely any weight to it. Almost affectionate. The point stands.”

I told him I would be in touch and we ended the call.

I stood there in my home office for a moment looking at the board I had set up on the far wall where I was tracking everything we knew. It was not much yet. A rental car. A fake name. A flight from Frerus. A person sitting in the dark watching fire.

But it was more than nothing.

And more than nothing was a start.

That evening the twins ambushed me.

I say ambushed but what I mean is that I walked into the living room at around six thirty intending to sit down and decompress for approximately fifteen minutes before dinner and found Amelia and Andrew both already on the couch, sitting very still and very upright, with the specific posture of two children who have planned something and are waiting for you to walk into it.

I stopped in the doorway.
