A Wedding Without Her
HANNAH’S POV:
On day eleven Paige showed up at the warehouse.
I want to be clear that I was not expecting her. Nobody was expecting her. The warehouse was in full working mode that morning, which meant it looked exactly like you would imagine a fashion house operating at emergency capacity looks: fabric bolts leaning against every available wall, toiles hanging from every rack, the steamer going, two people arguing quietly but intensely about the drape on one of the skirts, Theo standing in the middle of it all looking at a pattern piece and making the face he makes when something is not matching up and he cannot figure out why yet.
The security guard from the front came back to where I was standing with Sandra reviewing the timeline board and said, “There are some women at the entrance asking for you. One of them says she knows you from tennis.”
I blinked. “Paige?”
“She said her name was Paige yes ma’am.”
Sandra turned to look at me with an expression that said very clearly she was not going to pause the timeline review for social visitors and I held up one finger at her which was our shorthand for one minute, give me one minute and she turned back to the board with the air of someone doing a significant favour.
I went to the front entrance.
Paige was there. And she had not come alone. Behind her were three women, all of them dressed casually, all of them looking around at the warehouse exterior with the slightly wide eyes of people who had not entirely known what they were walking into. Paige herself was holding a large paper bag from a bakery and looked genuinely excited and also a little bit nervous which I found oddly endearing.
“I know I should have called,” she said immediately. “I know. I almost did not come because of that. But I was with the girls and I told them about the promise you made and we just, we ended up driving here and I brought food as a peace offering because I genuinely do not know the etiquette for showing up at someone’s studio unannounced.” She held out the bakery bag. “There are croissants. And those little almond things. And I think she put in some banana bread as well.”
